Which Jet To Learn On ?!?
 

I am interested in getting into jets. I have been flying for about 8 years now. The last 3 years been flying 3D with a 35% Carden Edge. Iv'e been thingking about jets for the last couple of years. I think I'm ready to get in to it. I would like to know which is the best Trainer jet that I should start out with or is there a jet out there that isn't a trainer but can be flown as easy as a trainer. I would appreciate any input from you guys. Also maybe you could paste me some links where to get the best buys at stores or form classifieds. I'e been looking at the classifieds but I have no idea what I should be looking for. Possibly also if you email me with your phone numbers, I would like to talk to someone for more details......thanks....tim

By far the easiest jet would be the baby boomerang. It can land very slow and has a reasonable flight envelope. They fly great with say a P60 but really come alive with a p70. I f you want to spend a little more money or actually alot more money than you can get a BVM bobcat. They land a little faster but not much with the crow setting programmed in( flaps down alierons up. It is very stable on landing yet can go 180 mph with a P70. No if you want something with a little more scale look to it, you can go for something like a Skymaster F-15. It flys very well and has great low speed characteristics. It was my first jet and with a little guidence you should have no problem. All of these jets would be a good first jet ( with the previous experience that YOU have already) I don't think you would have any problems. Of course there are other planes but these are the ones I have personal experience with. You can call me if you like if you have any questions. I will PM you with my number. Billy

Boomerang Intro or BTE Reaction 54. Nothing else comes close. The R54 is more Pattern like where the Intro is more sporty.
P60 or P70 on either.

Taking into consideration that you are flying the big 35% 3D stuff, you are obviously well qualified and experienced in the hobby. That said, you may find that the very basic trainer jets (some mentioned in this thread) may become somewhat boring very quickly, therefore something intermediate like the Hotspot, Rookie or something similar may fit the bill. This is also the time to consider what size of engine will meet your needs in the future. No point in investing in a 14 pound engine for your basic trainer if you are looking at 20# - 25# jets in the future. Another consideration is if you will be flying from grass or pavement, some jets are much harder on a grass field (burn marks) than others.

Thanks for the information guys.....Yes, I would like to look in to the future for engine classes.....I myself do find "trainer" planes do become boring after a while. But wasn't sure if this was true for jets also.....Also I will be flying off of grass runways. All are real nice. Very few minor bumps......Also if there is anyone out there that is from around the Richmond, Indiana area that I could hook up with to get familiar with turbine operations....startup....shut down...overall procedures....thanks again guys.....tim

How about the Aviation design Pheonix? It is better looking than the Boomerang and is as good a flier.

From what I have been looking at.....I like the Angel ARF from Altecarerc......Is this a good way to start?........I personally do not like scale look....no offense to anyone......I like the looks of the Angel....Roo....BVM BobCat.........Theses are the styles I particularly like......Is the Angel a QUALITY ARF?......Or should I be looking at the KIT versions...???.......

It is a bit of a gamble with your first turbine dollars, but you might want to consider the BobCat. It is not really the best "trainer", but it is a plane that a reasonably capable pilot can fly as a first turbine with help and guidance from turbine savvy friends. The reason I throw it out as an option is that there is little risk that you will get bored with it. If you get to the point where it seems a little weak with a P70, you can trade motors up to a P120 and acceleration and vertical performance become outstanding. It is also a tough airframe that can handle those less than perfect novice landings (speaking from personal experience). The biggest drawbacks are that the BobCat is more expensive, a bit more difficult to fly (land), and it is not currently available from BVM (but rumor has it that it will return soon). But another possibility not yet mentioned, but relatively easy to fly and well proven is the Composite ARF EUROSPORT. See it at:

All the above ships are 2nd or 3rd generation, well tested, and have had many various "improvements" made to the kits over time and most of the "bugs" have been worked out. In my opinion, a very important factor when purchasing your first high speed high-tech plane. They all have long threads here on RCU from which you can gain much valuable knowledge as you build.

My personal opinion on the planes recommended - others fall into this category too. Just do a LOT of research, and DON'T get into too big a hurry. I guarantee, you'll spend more than you think on your first jet, so make your decisions carefully.

Thanks again guys.....Input very useful...Patricia from Boomerang has already seen my post and contacted me about their jets....Quite a very nice person. She even directed me to different manufactures of other planes to look at to compare. That says a lot about her as a person in my opinion. She has offered me very competitive combo prices.....
