What causes crashes?
 

I would like to know what has caused your crashes. When my wife will lets me, I will move into turbines but I need to find out the cause of most crashes. Thanks for the info in advance. I hope to fly my YA F-16 DF in the next two weeks or so.

most of them are with taking off or even starting.[8D]

also we make it ourselves easy here.
we only show the vat amount to our wives.

Using cheap equipment, not shutting the main fuel shutoff valve off when you are filling, PILOT ERROR, lock out, losing the plane visually (especially the small yellow F-16). Mostly Pilot Error. Nick BTW, Some of these are not flying induced, a lot of dudes burn their jet down to the ground without ever getting the turbine started.

ok here ya go...


when your equipment is the best ...when contition are the best...when your skils have become the best..when you have master your jet...

for me only two reasons will kill your plane.....

1: you try to get admire by the rest of the people waching you by performing moves that are close or way out from your skills...or at least you have nt master them yet very good
you louse control becose you asked for it

2:time is passing....many flites with your jet...everytime same think....you dont enloy much flying and you like a change....this is when you have lost your respect for your jet
and there you dont show the proper care...like you ignore check list..you fly with out caring for the strenth of the airframe..you have totaly left your jet and you treat it like a simulator...take off fly land with out the proper servis....then the time will come for the jet to left u with a mecanical felure


the above two will cost you at least alot of money....secont hart pain if you have ever loved your modell....and intury of your self or someone else

now i only brake for the reason number 2 ....last time i broke my 30% cose i dint secure the one wing..

for the reason number 1 it only hapens to me when i fly on the sim

In my country the few crashes we have are caused by pilot error. A few years back when everybody thought that PCM receivers were the best and only right receivers to use, planes were crashing every once in a while due to radio lock-out. But now everyone is using PPM Dual Conversion or IPD receivers WITHOUT using the fail-safe function. So now we don't crash anymore. The fail safe funktion is actually the cause of most crashes, for whatever reason. In the end it all comes down to the pilot/builders experience. So, if you are unexperienced, go fly with the experienced people untill you know what you are dealing with.

Just my 2 cents after 10 years in jets.

From my experience, I agree on Stig with this, PCM is not a guarantee for succes, just covers a lot of trash untill things really go wrong.
Further more, stick to the KISS principle, I see many newcomers (And also opinioned pilots) who built there model full of so called safety equipment not knowing that the risk of failure doubles with every additional component installed.......

A lot of people will find this dangarous but I fly my jetmodels for 10 years with no PCM, no power-boxes, no dual battery packs etc...., just plain simple technique and there's a lot less that can go wrong. On the other hand, take maintenance very seriously, change fuel lines at least every 2 years, keep batteries fit with the delta chargers by deepcycling them once in a while, replace the main battery switch also once every two years and take a good look to all the components once in a while. My models are opened up every winter, turbine/fuel cels/landing gear/batteries are removed for inspection. Just a small summ of items, basically, use common sence and don't let everyone change your mind. A lot of "blamed" so-called mechanical failures could have been prevented if some maintenance was done....think about that! Good to learn from experienced modelers but you know how it is when at the field for the first time.....;).....from the ten modelers there you get at least 9 different opinions how to alter things for the best result.......

No real data here, just based on my experience and observations:

#1 By far Pilot Error.
#2 Equipment/Mechanical Failure. Largely due to poor set up, improper control linkage/hinges/servos for the job, lack of maintenance.
#3 Radio problems. This gets a lot more blame than it deserves, since a lot of pilots are reluctant to admit their errors.

Simple is good, but REDUNDANCY does NOT increase the chance for failure.

Also stay with name brand, heavy duty, quality components throughout (servos, wiring, etc.).

Maintenance is not just a good idea, it's a NECESSITY!!!

You are right, if a system is truly redundant ,reliability is improved. I think what Gerald was referring to (and I agree with him) is that a lot of the systems sold for use in our jets are not redundant and add additional components that can cause a crash if they fail. For example if I add a regulator I have added one more component that will cause a crash if it fails. Reliability decreases.

An example of a redundant battery system is where two battery packs are on separate switches with separate wiring to the receiver. One battery/switch backs up the other. If one battery or switch fails the system will continue to operate off of the other. On the other hand if you use one of the systems that have one battery powering the receiver and another powering the servos you have just doubled the probability of a battery failure. If either battery fails you will crash.

A simple rule of reliability is that as you add more components reliability decreases because you increase the probability of a component failure, so KISS. One way to improve reliability is to add a truly redundant system or component such that if one component fails the back up takes over. Another way is with a failsafe design, like a switch that fails in the closed position rather than open.

From some of the postings I've read it is obvious that a lot of rc pilots do not understand what redundancy means, and a lot of the so called safety equipment on the market actually decreases reliability.
