Minimum Safety Standards?
 

Can someone please point me to any and all official documents, AMA or otherwise, that describe or dictate the minimum safety standards, precautions and operating parameters that must be in place and used to operate an RC Turbine around the spectators, other pilots and event or club personnel?

I am trying to obtain general liability insurance for the Jet Luge exhibition and since it is a one of a kind act, I need to write a document that shows comparible or associated vehicles and product use that are currently insured to operate and make reference to the required safety regulations needed to maintain that insurance.

I appreciate any guidance on this subject. You may post here or PM me if you would like.

I have several full scale air show events that want me, but I MUST bring my own insurance.

http://www.modelaircraft.org/PDF-files/510-A.pdf lists the turbine-specific safety requirements from the AMA. This is in addition to the rules that apply to ALL models regardless of powerplant type.

You could probably also contact Carl Maroney and / or Ilona Maine at the AMA (see http://www.modelaircraft.org/maildir.asp for contact info) for hints & tips about any specific turbine-related issues that were "red flags" in obtaining insurance coverage.

The Gas Turbine Builders Association (GTBA) Code of Practice for the Safe Operation of Model Gas Turbines.

This has been approved by the BMFA and JMA (UK Model and Jet flying organisations). The BMFA (British Model Flying Association) are the insurers for the British fliers.

Thank you very much for the references. I still need to find the one that defines the event requirements that sperate the spectators from the equipment operation. Now that I am an AMA member (eeek) I guess I can search their info and ask them.
I am also a new member of our Local RC Club. Charles County RC Club.

As always, I go at things backward. I have been running the turbines and now it is time to learn to fly the Alpha 60 RTF my son bought me for Chistmas. One day the two will come together and I will see you all on the flight line with TX in hand.

Also check the owner's manual. It gives safe distances etc. for spectators.

thanks. yup. The owners manual was the first reference I had... so far, nothing should scare them away.. other than just being different.
