Which Sherwin Williams Auto Clear to Use?
 

Hi Guys I had asked about the Sherwin Williams line of 2 part Acrylic enamels and got some great information about 3 weeks ago. Now I just need to ask two more questions. I was able to find a source for automotive Lacquers and I was able to get my paint for my Jepe F16 Thunderbird mixed in the correct colors. But can Terry or someone else tell me which least Expensive Sherwin Williams Two part gloss clear and a gallon of reducer to buy to top coat my lacquers? Also can I thin the top coat gloss up to 200% like the guys using PPG can do? The closest Auto paint store sells the Sherwin Williams line and I know that some of you know that paint line? I do have another question my 3M Blue Acrylic Spot putty finally dried up what can I replace it with so I can use it with Lacqer spray primer.

Not too sure about the Sherwin Williams clear, I use Dupont, but I think any Version that is catyalized two part + thinner would be OK. 150 to 200% thinned? Try it on a test panel first, to see how hard it is to run.

As to the spot putty, I have recommended "Evercoat 400" as the cure all to model planes for years. I love it for filler, dings and nicks. You don't even have to reprime it if you are sure it is sanded smooth enough! :cool:

These are the clears I've used. Mostly the CC635 for airplanes and heli canopies and lately the CC639 (Super clear but a few $$ more). I've had great success laying these clears over the Pactra RC car paint (airbrushed or spray can) as a time and cost saver. I use the SW base coats for the larger projects.

CC635 ULTRA 7000® HS Air Dry Clearcoat
CC637 ULTRA 7000® Maximum Performance Clearcoat
CC639 ULTRA 7000® Super Glamour Clearcoat

Pick you hardener based on your painting environment:

UH22 Ultra System Rapid Hardener
UH33 Ultra System Medium Hardener
UH44 Ultra System Medium-Slow Hardener
UH55 Ultra System Slow Hardener
UH60 ULTRA System Air Dry Hardener

These are self-explanatory and have the temp range on the label:

US1 ULTRASOLV® #1 Cold Temp Reducer
US2 ULTRASOLV® #2 Cool Temp Reducer
US3 ULTRASOLV® #3 Moderate Temp Reducer
US4 ULTRASOLV® #4 Warm Temp Reducer
US5 ULTRASOLV® #5 Hot Temp Reducer
US6 ULTRASOLV® #6 Tropical/Desert Temp Reducer

You can thin out the last coat of clear as much as you like (I've gone over 200%) with no adverse effects in 60-90+ deg temps.

WRT the spot putty, I believe the blue, red, or green will work fine and the auto paint store should carry either one. I use both the green and lately the red spot putty on my current street rod project.

Tom thank you very much for the detailed listing of the Sherwin Williams clear coats that I can buy to spray over my lacquer. I really appreciate the help and especially the part numbers. Now I will know what I am talking about when I go down to the paint shop and talk to the counter guy about what type of clear coat , hardener and reducer I want. I saved your list to my hard drive and printed out a copy to take with me to the paint store.

Hi Tom, I was getting ready to paint a couple of jets so I pulled out the sheet that I printed for the Sherwin Williams clear gloss that you helped me with. Showing me which clear and hardener plus the reducer. Well your going to love this but I happen to live in Orange County California one of the most regulated counties in the nation when it comes to paint, we cant even get PPG lacquers and clear coats anymore which is what I used to spray. Well I called the automotive paint shop where I have always had my paints mixed or at got my clear from. Well The State will not allow the clear that you recommened to be sold in California or at least in my part of it [>:] So I cannot get any of the CC 635-CC637 clear products. Its been replaced in California [>:] with CC-21 which they told me is basically the same and to get a quart with a pint of hardener and quart of reducer for 100:00 dollars so not bad. They told me that its compatiable with my lacquer that I am able to get from a secret source and my trim colors Model Master Enamels that I spray with my airbrush. So I am going to print out the 2 page directions from the SW website. Just wanted to let you know what I found out Tom. So guys in California if you need Sherwin Williams clear gloss this is pretty good stuff from what they told me.
