Aviation Design Phoenix Build Thread

Decided to build an Aviation Design Phoenix to have an all terrain jet that is quick to build, fast, reasonably small to transport, and can withstand the worst of grass fields.

I chose Behotec C36 retracts, trailing links all around, 2.2L Kevlar tank, Hitec 5125 on the rudders, JR8411 on Elevator, Ailerons and Flaps.

Also picked the Behotec 66, 19lbs thrust turbine for power.

This kit comes together fast. Should not take more than a couple of weeks working evenings on it to complete.

Tail booms and Stab come together quick.

Engine installation is a breeze. Really simple kit.

You will be very happy with the Behotec landing gear. I have them on my Boomerang XL and my new Scorpion.. Got to admit that I havn't tried them yet but looking at the quality, I think they will withstand a rough grass field. Good luck with your Phoenix. We have one at out field with a P80 and it's a bullet. Lands very gentle too

I have a Phoenix, and have 17 flights on it before the winter closed in.
Mine came with Eurokit gera and I had to modify the gear to keep from bending on takeoff.

I wish the supplyer would have supplied the Beotech.
With that combo you have you will have a great flyer.

P.S. The location for the wing screw is 7.5" out from the boom.
Not what they call for.
Check it with a dental mirror the hard point is 7.5 out.

OlsenRrrc,

Did you have to modify the main struts, or was it just the nose? I have the Eurokit struts but thinking of swapping them all out, I am swapping the nose for sure. Thanks for your time.

EICAS,

Could you please post a couple of pics of the nose gear retracted please, I want to see if the trtailing link is going to interfere with an ideas I have for the inside of my phoenix. Thanks!

Chris

Here is what I did to the Eurokit to stop them from bending at the 6mm joint on takeoff.
I drillled out the rolling blocks to 1/4".
Then I carefully drilled out the Mainstruts to 1/4 "
Don't do this all at once.
Go up in 1/64' incrument.
Go to the local hardware store and get Therr 1/4-20 sholdered hexhead bolts.
They should be grade 8, very hard.
They are usulay brass in colour.
Cut off the head and use the sholder (1/4) part in place of the 6mm that came with the gear.
On the nose gear rolling block, drill that out to 17/64".
While at the hardware store buy a Helicoil 1/4-20 thread repair kit.
Tap the rolling block for the Helicoil and insert two (2) Helicoils from the bottom.
Then take the third bolt and therad it into the rolling block put on the steering arm and make sure that you have at lease 6or 7 degrees of movement then cut thbolt to the length for the nose strut.
Rember to gring flat spots on the bolts to prevent side twisting.
Works great.
They should have used the larger Giant Eurokit gear, it has a larger coulping
pin 8mm (3/8")
And the rolling blocks are bigger.

Well it is done. Came in at 18lbs dry, 21.5lbs wet.
Now we wait for good weather to test fly. Will come back with a full report then.

Peter, you installation looks like a work of art! Great job. I can't wait to try the behotec retracts/struts on my next project. Thanks for all you attention to my questions. The phoenix is beautiful and with the Behotec 66 on the back is irresistable.
Great work my friend.
