RT Models Mig-15 / Toki .18

I purchased a Mig-15 from Mark Turner of RT Models a couple of weeks ago. I bought the large version that has a wingspan of 42.5 inches. The mig was made for a wemotec electric setup, but Im putting in a toki .18 engine and fan unit in it and hoping for the best. The following are some construction photos that I have so far and some commentary. I would like comments on how I can make this plane fly better/faster/lighter/straighter :D

What the jet is supposed to look like after all said and done:

Setting up the formers for the planking job....definitely would have been easier with a magnetic building board, but I got the job done.

Planking the fuse. My first attempt at this task and I know I didnt get it 100% correct, but I think it should be fine.

test fit the toki

After getting the fuse done, I test fit the toki fan...seems I'd have to trim down the fuse former just a bit to get it to fit....but not much. :)

Toki Mount

Created a mount for the toki unit by using a pair of sig landing gear plywood stock that a friend let me use, works great and does the job.

The wing turned out to be a VERY strong structure. Here you can see the wing with the landing gear block that I put in it. I think I should fiberglass the outter rib that its connected to for added strength.

The horizontal stabs built up pretty much like the wing, but I fully sheeted them..didnt bother to take pics of it in construction phase.

Here are all the stabs

The plans called for a flying wing, but after much consideration, I decided to go with elevators. Since its a built up Fin, I slotted a hole for a mini servo that will connect spitting rods to the elevators.

My solution to Nose wheel steering :) There wont be a rudder on this jet, the mechanics are more than I care to explore right now.

Currently im getting all the details ironed out as far as electrics, fuel tank, ect. This is what I've purchased so far.

1 GWS mini servo for the rudder
1 GWS mini servo for the NWS
1 GWS mini Servo for throttle
2 HS81's for ailerons.
700mah bat
regular reciever

I bought an 8 oz flask type tank that I've molded to to fit underneath the engine. I've got to carve out a hole for the nipple to go through but shouldnt be a problem. The ducting is gonna be posterboard for the front, pepsi 2 litter soda plastic for the center and posterboard soaked in epoxy for the rear. Not sure how the plastic is gonna hold up to the heat, but I made sure that no part touches the engine.

Currently waiting for a good deal on a reciever before I can get everything put together.

Very nice job!!!
Great pictures for new comer like me.
If you can put all pictures together and show in series with some words, that will be a big help.
Nice pictures!!

I've seen their kit before, but whats your opinion on assembly? I know planking is a pain, but it looks pretty clean otherwise.
I don't recommend putting the tank directly below the engine or right on the CG for that matter. Whats going to happen is as the fuel get's used the aircrafts pitch is going to cause it to go from tail heavy to nose heavy because of the fuel sloshing. Nose heavy really isn't a problem, but tail heavy on a slow turn for landing could be very bad. I would bring the tank forawrd, and the engine slightly back. That ways it's a little nose heavy on take off which is ok, and then spot on when empty. Of course it depends on tank shape etc so might not be that big a deal. Be sure to break the motor in before your first flight. They really need to be loosened up to get that little extra for ROG. Weight wise you should be ok. If it flies with electric you'll be lighter with the glow anyway. When your breaking the motor in I'd check your run time also. Maybe shoot for a smaller tank. 8 oz's is the same size tank I have in my .40 size Kavalier. Doesn't sound too big though. Check around this forum there's some info on tuning the toki engine up. To get close to 3 lbs of thrust out of it. If you can do that you should get good performance. Go with the lightest wheels, and gear you can og course you probably figured that already. Also remember ducting for a DF is different than an EDF. DF's need thrust tubes or else you get plenty of static thrust, but they don't have the efflux velocity to push the jet much past lift off speed. Where EDF's only slightly reduce in tailcone diameter because they're bass ackwards. EDF's get high efflux, and low static thrust. DF's get high static, and low efflux.
Other than that break a leg! ;) I'll be eagerly waiting for a flight report. It's got to fly better than the kyosho's do at least. Electric kits are just designed light from the word go.
Epoxy coated poster board may be a little heavy though. It shouldn't make much of a difference though I'd just go easy on the epoxy. Should have plenty of strength in it without the epoxy. Maybe just epoxy the seam, and then use some fuel proof spray paint on it to seal it up good.

B1,

Looks great. If you're looking for optimal performance, you might want to think about axing the gear. Go for a bungy launch and land on some grass if avaliable. You'll get less drag that way as well.

Can't wait to see some completed picts. Keep us updated.

Jacky,
Once I get the project done I'll condense all the pictures and make it a better view for people. Thanks for the kind words.

Russ, I thought about that, but I dont know anyone that bungee lauches at our field and I've never done that, and theres something to be said about landing on all three and bringing her back to your feet.....just feels good :D
