I was looking around You tube today and found this!
Not sure if Gordon has posted the link on this thread but it is worth watching.
Awesome sound from that Stumax....are you sure it does not have a turbine in it? [8D]

I have a 54" ws Bob Dively Hawk. I have the wing glassed and ready for paint, the FG fuse and the tail control surfaces. I have nothing else. The fuse has no internal parts or structure. Can someone tell me where to get the remaining parts to build this plane with a DF glow and/or EDF?
What size fan?
I have Rom-Air Retracts, what are the correct struts and wheels?
Inlet duct Y ?
Thanks,
Zack

I just got one of the Jim Fox Hawk from a friend. Its the older version model and will just need some finishing up. I plan on using my Wren 44 for it.

What do you guys recommend for fuel tanks and retracts.

Thanks,

Hi Paul,

I am fitting my ruder servo into my hawk the instructions recommend 10mm of movement each way. This dos not look like enough to me for a good knife-edge.

Would it be possible for you to measure the movement you have at the bottom of the rudder?

Thanks John

What are most modelers doing about brakes on this jet?

Yep, that is all it needs!

Sorry, I don't use brakes on it.

Marine.
Is it the old one with a glass fuselage and foam wing?

We were graced with perfect flying weather this Sunday and with the show season just about to get going, I cracked the Hawk out for a quick session.
The FASST system fired up perfectly as normal and the Wren 44 Gold was next to follow, cobwebs blown from the tailpipe.:D
Well, it flew as beautifully as normal and luckily a good friend was there with his camera!:D
I thought I would share them with you.
A couple of them are really excellent shots, difficult (unless you are a purist) to distinguish from the real thing.

I was talking to Dave Wiltshire of Motors and Rotors today about the Fox Composites Hawk and Sabre.
He is pleased to say he now has both in stock and the original supply problems have been resolved.
Kit price in the UK for each of the kits is around £550.00
This is complete with wing and fuselage bags.
Excellent value for a great pair of models.
Still flying both of mine :D

Zack,

I had the Bob Dively Hawk also, years ago. They are short kits. Mine didn't come with fuselage formers either.

I kept the canopy and some vac formed parts then sold it. Guy put a prop on it.

I'm using the canopy for a scratch built C-101 I'm converting to jet that was originally built for a prop.

Not a bad kit or beginning.

Charles

This model is the Fox kit. Built by Gordon.

I'm trying to find out who makes the nosewheel and main struts pictured in the photo.

Anyone?

Yes GW...where did you get those legs from?

They are perfect.

Paul

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

Hi Guys

The main legs are Sullivan Pylon Brand units which Dick Spreadbury very kindly gave me, along with the recommendation to cut off one side of the wheel fork to make them look more scale. The axles are now allen-headed bolts with brass tube bearing inserts to stop the threads from chewing up the wheels. I don't know if the Sullivan units are still available, and suspect that Jet A1 items wil be the nearest current equivalent.

The nose leg is a Eurokit 15080 unit which I bought from Motors and Rotors. It's OK for scale looks, but the geometry and springing are not all they could be, with insufficient travel and an overly stiff spring. I've replaced the spring with a softer one which I found in my bits box, which is better.

The wheels are all Eurokit items now. The main wheels began life with the foam inserts, but I decided that the tyres were too hard and removed the inserts for more shock-absorption. With the model weighing up to 17lb loaded with large lipos, and a wing loading of 4lb/sq ft, the softer tyres do help to cushion the impact when the plane "arrives".

The Hawk will be re-engined with a MW44 later this year, losing almost 3lb of landing weight in the process. I can almost hear the retracts and legs sighing with relief. Even when re-engined with the same engine as yours Paul, my Hawk will still weigh significantly more than yours does, partly due to the legs, but mainly due to my inexperience with the new HVLP spray gun I used to paint the ship and my problems with overcoming fisheye. Oh well, we live and learn!

BTW, I now lower the ailerons by 5mm with 35deg full flap, and along with the softer sprung nosegear and softened tyres, landings are somewhat softer, but still fairly buttock-clenching experiences at max all-up weight. I still really enjoy every flight though. It's a peach.

Cheers

Gordon

Gordon,

Are you absolutely sure about those struts?

I've been all over Eurokit's website and I can't find the nosewheel that looks like yours. Nor can I find a part number of 15080.

I gotta tell ya, I never knew Sullivan made a quality strut that looks like your mains either? Sullivan is well into the "Sport" market, unusual that they would have a machined gear leg strut?

Did you get my PM which I left a few days ago, in regards to your Hawks gear? I left in on that UK Forum.

You did a great job with that model.

Thanks for sharing.

3D,

Thanks for that link. Be nice if there was a side view? When will you be buying yours? I'd like to see the side view.

This may be an option for mains, I'm considering them.

I have mine raised for crow, works really well.

Hi Charles

As you'll have seen above, the noseleg number I quoted is correct. If you download the Eurokit .pdf cat there is a side view.

Ref the pics you posted, the extra link between the wheel fork and leg will greatly improve the sprung action over that of the Eurokit leg, which binds at both ends of its travel, and when I get some spare dough I might well go for one of those. I presume they are the Jet A1 legs?

Yep, did eventually reply to your pm, also to your post on t'other forum.

BTW Xair, the Hawk has been a great technology demonstrator for the Stumax fan with its good power and great near-turbine sound. I don't regret going that route one bit, and Stumax fan sales are now taking off. In HOT & DRY countries (ie not yours, or the bit of England where I live, especially right now!) where there are turbine bans for part of each year, the Stumax can give jet guys the chance to carry on with their jet flying and still sound almost turbine-like, unlike most other fans for which the sound has been likened to that of an angry baboon in a sewer pipe.

It's a good time for me to move on though, and having been impressed by the minimal field support and ease of operation of an MW44 Gold Autostart I saw at one of Dick's Classic Jets events recently, the decision made itself, especially when an unused one appeared on the web at a price not much more than the two sets of big lipos I was almost ready to buy as replacements for short-lived ones which had expired during the year.

Yes. I tried crow but didn't like it as it didn't slow tthe landing speed noticeably. At 16-17lb my Hawk needs more lift on the approach, not less, so as I've done with with other models, I tried drooped aileron and it works OK for me.

I never could justify the price of batteries for high power edf's (or big helis for that matter) especially when lipo's are so volitile, but can now understand where the high power EDF has a place, never thought about hot countries and turbine bans etc, here we are incouraged to fly turbines as it helps dry the place out :D

Setting the ailerons down is interesting, I Have always been weary of it in the past as it effectivily introduces wash in, does it not make the hawk more prone to drop a wing ? When I am setting up any new model I always would make sure that the neutral position of the ailerons are always on the slightly up side just to help with the wash out. Especially ailerons at the tips.
