Does anybody have any comments about this plane? Jackjet, what phantom do you own? Would this plane be a good turbine conversion plane? -Steve

Kaptain Kaos,
the JHH F-4 flies very well on a DF and it would make a good turbine jet.Check this out -www.jethanger.com.
My F-4 is a twin Tom Cook with 2 OS.91's and Dynamax fans.30lbs.

Thank you Jack. I have been to the JHH site and have takled to Larry on the phone. I still have a while to go to get my F4 in the air. But I am enjoying the building of it.

Shaun,
thank you so much for the kind words,I really thank you for that-she just keeps flying-maybe she doesnt know that she is supposed to have a turbine for power-but I will keep flying her as long as she will let me..........

Y/A F-4

Shaun,

I agree the Y/A F-4 is a better value and goes together much quicker than the JHH kit. I built one and its a blessing to have all that factory work done for you, but it doesn`t have the scale look of a F-4 IMHO. The JHH version really looks the part.

What is non-scale about the Yellow F-4? How off is it and how upsetting are the non-scale attributes? Thanks.

YES! Phantoms have been my favorite aircraft since I was 13 years old (long, long tima ago). But I too can not afford the BVM, so I will continue to live vicariously through David Reid's and Dennis Lott's!

They do? They fit such that the wheels are all the way up and the door lays flat? If so, my bad....

But the manufacturer once explained to me why the gear called out for in the kit didn't fit. In the photo pack that comes with the kit, the mains are sticking out, too. Still a nice looking/flying bird, though. I have a very high opinion of JHH airplanes (I bought four of them over the years), but if I can build a Phantom of similar size/looks/performance in considerably less time, and for less money, well, you know.......

In any case, I love to participate in harmless bantering, but don't let this degenerate into a 'my F-4 can beat up your F-4'. My perspective: YAC, JHH, ITP, CJM, BVM, Miller, even Great Planes! If it has the wingtips angled up and the stabs angled down, get it in the air!

Question: How do you modify the noses? If the kit comes with a nose attatched, what does the builder do, cut it off and attatch another? I'm curious because I'd like to build my Phantom as a Marine Corps bird like the one my Dad flew.

Maybe I can get a J nose from JHH?

The scale deviation on the Yellow F-4 is that it's modelling an F-4E, but is the same length as a B model. The F-4E was a great deal longer than the F-4B/J and in the scale modelled, the Yellow is about 4" too short.

That's it..

F-4 Nose

There is a long nose that is available for the JHH F-4. Just like with the Mirage kit (long nose also available for it for KFIR or Mirage 5 versions), one would have to cut the shorter nose off and replace it with the longer nose. Pretty easy to do.

I don't know how well a short JHH nose would work on a Y/A F-4. Proportionally, it may not work. My understanding is that the Y/A F-4 fuselage is the same length as the JHH, but the Y/A is the F-4E model which means that it is actually a smaller scale than 1/10. The full size F-4E had a longer fuselage than the F-4J. You could still try it if you really wanted to...it may be easier to come up with a new one.

Yeah, the gear deffinately fit...at least, all of the JHH F-4s I've seen have had gear that fit into the wings.

F-4

The BVM F-4 now has a nose gear that extends under transmitter control, that fixes the ground stance problem.

Hello
First I would like to apologize about the first reply, I am new to here so please bear with me. I have been a huge F4 fan for years, my dad told me stories about when he was on the USS Connie CV64, as he calls it, when I was growing up. Anyway I'm just getting started in model airplane flying and i know these are not beginner kits I want to build one even if its not to fly, just yet. I checked out JHH site, very nice. I wanted to get the Great Planes kit but I am having no luck at all. Can anyone send me the links to the manufactures of all the F4 kits that are mentioned above. I would greatly appreciate it. I would really like to start saving for a kit, even if its to build and hang in my garage for display, there has never been a plane since so beautiful. Thanking everyone kindly now for the help.

Reconnaisance version (RF-4) avail?

One other thing about the JHH F-4, it can be built as any variant you want. F-4B - F-4S. The Y/A only comes as an F-4E model...

One other thing, the landing gear DO fit in the wing of the JHH F-4...

Thanks for any advice. Anyone come across a RF-4 Jet Hanger Hobbies model modification? The RF-4 is an F-4 with the cameras in the nose instead of the gun. Specifically I would be gratefull for any infos regarding the RF-4E....OOps I mean the Recce RF-4C.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi,

The gear on JHH's Phantom can fit the wing if you build it in a non scale way like on Yellows F-4s ( legs are at right angle from the longitudinal axis of the aircraft) otherwise it won't fit , the full scale had a slight rotating action while retracting.

Shaun,
I remember an ad in the early RCJI magazines about a short nose conversion for Yellows F-4, I'll try to find it back, even if it hasprobably disappeared now...

Florent,

Thanks, I'd be very interested to see that. I'd love to have a Marine Corps F-4.

Got one!

I love this kit!!! I got one for my birthday :D (the 2nd of June) and called Larry and he said the turbine conversion is easy. I plan to fly mine with a Dynamax/Lee modified K&B 82 first then with a Wren 54. Keep up the good work JHH!!!

Jetputtz, your a little biased on the subject, since there is a blood relation between you and JHH.

My best advice would be to go with the JHH f-4. I say that because of the great customer service !!!! I purchased a Wren 54 kit from them and Larry Wolf took the time to answer all of my questions. I bought a (BAE HAWK-ARF) and had some building questions,Larry was glad to help and wanted my airplane to be a total success!!!!! thank you, rudder3333!!!!!!

JHH is a good choice!

Steve,

i am surprised that nobody mentioned the rotation issue of the Y/A f4...

i am a big fan of the f4 and was very much impressed with the yellow kit untill i did some searching and it seems that the rotation problem is a bummer! it can be "cured" with some mods (like moving the main L gear a bit forward ect....) but why bother?

the JHH kit has a much better feedback as is... ;)

Hi,

Anyone know of a flying Tom Cook F-4 where the power is 2 turbines? Would this be a good plane to convert?

Thanks,

Paul
