Trim wheels and brakes setup
Looking for some advice on setting up a set of trim wheels and brakes (ultra precision valve) to make a system that is reliable, won't lock-up or cause diffirential braking etc.
Some general questions: 1. Should I glue the wheels to the hubs with CA? 2. Should the brake oring be greased to prevent lock-up? Thanks. |

I never glued the tires or greased the valve. I guess sooner or later it may require grease. One thing: be certain that your actuation servo does not pull the plunger too far out of the valve (old style, I think they improved this on later versions). If it does, it sometimes will not line up correctly to go back in and will jam thereby stalling the servo and not allowing any braking.

There is no need to glue the tires to the hubs. I put about 200 landings on a set of 2.5" wheels on a paved runway. Needless to say, the tires were worn out when I replaced them and they were still quite difficult to remove from the rims. I have always used the Trim brake valve as well....I HIGHLY RECCOMNEND IT!! The Trim valve is the best kept secret in modeling.........
When I assemble the brakes, I smear a light coat of lithium grease on the O-ring and bushing. This keeps the brakes operating smoothly. I just serviced the brakes on my A-7 after 30 flights since the last cleaning and everything looks good....'Could have gone to 50 flights.................... Tailwinds, John |

Tailwinds, John Even with my other projects, I've used trim valves from Ed. No leaks, reliable operation, decent consumption... Only thing I do differently is to use Parker o-ring lubricant on the o-rings and in the o-ring grooves, as apposed to his lithium grease, and I do it once every year or so. That's probably an arbitrary detail though... Kelly |
