BVM MIG 15 TailPipe
Hey Guys,
I've got a BVM Mig 15 thats been grounded for a few years due to a tailpipe fire. The pipe is fine, but the aluminum cooling shroud is shot/melted. It is a very lite aluminum. Is there any upgraded stuff from maybe Tam out there to replace the whole tailpipe setup? Or is it best to just call BVM and get the material. I've looked local and find much thicker stuff, nothing as lite as the original. Any experience with alternatives? Thanks.... Chris |
RE: BVM MIG 15 TailPipe
Chris,
The pipe in my BVM MIG is Stainless Steel. I got it new a couple of years ago from BVM so maybe they changed the metallurgy. Give Tom Dodgen a call. I found him to be a real expert on the MIG. John S. |
RE: BVM MIG 15 TailPipe
Chris, I just replaced the pipe and bypass in my Mig. The new pipe IS a "true" dual-walled pipe. They did away with the thin aluminum outer shroud and replaced it with a stainless outer pipe. The new pipe fits in just like the old set-up. I would just call BV and order the new pipe from them, it is a much better pipe than the original set-up.

RE: BVM MIG 15 TailPipe
If you want to replace the thin outer piper insulation... similar to what BVM supplied originally just buy a roll of the thickest aluminum foil you can find, and double or triple it by folding and rolling and you'll come close to what was supplied in the early pipe setup. Use the aluminum tape to seal the rolled finished product...

Thanks for the input guys. I've noticed a couple pics on line that look like folks aren't running the shroud at all. Is that the case or is this the double walled setup? Again....thanks.

RE: BVM MIG 15 TailPipe
Two words- Tam pipes, just give Tam your required pipe specs and rest assured Tam will build you the coolest running best quality/most efficient pipe available IMHO. All my jets run Tams pipes and I never have had a problem cooling or otherwise.

That unit if i am not mistaken is the double walled unit, it looks identical to the one I have in the kit i am building.

RE: BVM MIG 15 TailPipe
When I ordered my pipe and bypass from BVM, it came with a separate bellmouth, so it could be set-up without the bypass if you choose. If it is set-up to run the bypass, and you choose to leave the bypass out and run the bellmouth, you will have to build engine mounting rails, b/c the bypass serves this purpose and there is no provision for mounting the engine otherwise.
I'm not sure who is making BV's Mig pipe now, but it does look like it could be a Tam's product, but I do not know for sure. The quality is so good; if it is not a Tam's pipe, I'd be surprised. Tam and BV have worked together in the past, so it is possible it is. If you call Tam and ask him for a pipe for the Mig and he says, "you orda for BVN", then you'll know for sure. ;):D U da man TAM!
