How come that..........

How come that every time an accident happens that involves a jet, it gets more press. There were much carnage at the big heli event in Muncie last weekend and I just checked the heli forum and there was no mention of it.

What do you guys think?

RE: How come that..........

You know that is a good question because when we were flying ducted fan there was never any more mention of a jet crash than anything else just another plane hitting the ground hard. Now that we have turbines that do have the risk of fire, even though the speed isnt any more than it used to be everyone points out when a jet has an issue so i would say maybe it is that but it doesnt even take a crash, it could be a runway incident and it still gets attention.. It would probably make the news if a heli flew straight and level and did a normal traffic pattern............ [>:]

AFAIK there isn't an anti-helicopter sentiment within the AMA OF's like there is with turbines.

LOL I guess that was why they had more than 450 Heli pilots at the event in Muncie last weekend.
They really rolled out the red carpet for them.

While it irritates me too, especially because I want to turbine power my 1/4.5 scale Me-163... I can understand why the AMA has an issue with turbines.

Just look at the crashes. How often do you see a fire break out from a ducted fan or standard glow powered crash?

Not to mention the speed turbines have over even the best ducted fan aircraft at this time.

Insurance is expensive, and there are a lot of eyes on the flying RC world now due to some weirdo's at Fox... and the AMA is stuck in the middle.

Speed should not even be a consideration IMO, a quarter 40 pylon plane is flying as fast or faster than most jets, in an environment where crashes are far more likely, dynamic slope soarers are flying faster than most turbines can reach, model rockets are a hell of a lot faster (admittedly for a very short time) etc etc etc.

I've seen fires caused by gasoline engines, I've seen a fire caused by a glow heli crash, I've seen nitro powered cars cause fires, and I've seen model rockets cause fires. I agree with Ghost, why do people put so much emphasis on jets? All those fires I've seen from other planes don't get sensationalized like a jet crash does, it's stupid if you ask me.

Evil_Merlin 08-13-2007 01:09 PM

RE: How come that..........

Yes true, but I've yet to see a glow (or gas) plane hit the ground and spew flaming jet fuel for the entire run of the crash, like at Joe Nall this year. I've been flying for 30 plus years and I've never seen a glow or gas plane do something like that.

Remember, just because WE as pilots know its a bunch of bunk doesn't mean the other non-pilots out there don't get reactionary.

A 55lb. jet flying at 100 mph hits with the same force as a 55lb prop job flying at 100mph... but thats not what some people see/hear, they just see turbine & kerosine and freak...

Please remember I am NOT supporting the AMA's lack of care or its actual distaste of the turbine pilots, I'm just commenting on why they may be doing it.

I believe the jet community would be better served if we were to concentrate more on our own issues rather than pointing fingers at other groups and whining about how unfair it is that they are treated better than us!

It's all jealousy... If someone can't have something they want, They will try to make hard for the person that has it. But in reality some of these giant scale prop jobs are as just as mutch or more.

RE: How come that..........

I think the jet commuity need to work to bring turbines into the regular
model fold. Almost every field if they even allow turbines have all kinds
of special rules for them, a few weeks ago i opened a thread about how
unfair the waiver system is being run but a some of the turbine guys
think the system is just fine the way it, but I think that as long as
turbines are singled out the the way they are now there will always be the
issues you speak of.

If the AMA and model community could as much as is reasonable make
turbines just like any other model I think it would make it better for
the model community overall.

If everyone took that kind of approach to its logical conclusion, then women & colored folks still would not be allowed to vote. As far as I'm concerned, there's absolutely nothing wrong with highlighting discrimination in any of its forms.

Yep, you said it Ira. The field I was at this weekend does not allow tubines, nor does my regular flying field. Heck I don't even know where the closest field is to me that allows turbines. I hope its not Gardener... thats a hike!

With all the noise ordinances going up all over the place I'm getting nervous unless you live in the boonies, gassers and glows are going to slowly fade out too.

RE: How come that..........

I feel the reason is the turbine itself and the fact that more and more kits for them are coming online. It has changed the landscape of the rc modeling hobby where you have people seeing unique airframes and sounds one wouldn’t normally see at your local field. With that, the perception the model is expensive and explosive comes into play. So when an accident does happen, it gets peoples attention more so than a glow or electric powered airframe (even if it’s a giant scale).

You have to step back and look at it from the perspective of the majority of the people in the hobby and those that attend shows not in the hobby. I went to this years IMAA event in Chowchilla, CA to see the giant scale warbirds and there was a noon time demo of a BVM KingCat. I’ve seen and flown a KingCat before and the guy who flow the jet that day IMO flew very conservative (no smoke either) in front of a few hundred people. I was more interested in watching the people watching the jet. It was a big eye opener because the reaction from the crowd was with wonder and complete attention. I’ve been flying turbines for nearly two years now and it’s really amazing to meet people (just a month ago) at the field who’ve never seen one before and have a boatload of questions. This is the point when you have the ability to shape there perception of this aspect of the hobby favorably.

Hey,

Let's face it. A jet crash is more exciting and thrilling (in a morbid sort of way) than a heli crash. It almost seems like heli crash is synonymous with heli-flight...

guys,

It is all about the $$. Think about it how many people die every day non noticeable? But if MR.GreenPack passed away, the whole village or city or country or the world will know about him prorata to how much does he own.

The Jets are those rich guys:D
