Hand held air pump...From TBM
I wonder what the good , Bad, and the ugly about the hand held air pump. available from Troy Built Models.
It looks very nice, I wonder if it will fill a R/C retract cannister up to 100 PSI? |
RE: Hand held air pump...From TBM
Found the life on these pumps to be a bit short, thus the reason for us discontinuing sales on them. They used to be quite good, till vector was bought out by Black & Decker, seems quality has suffered since...

I've found that one great solution is to buy a cheap air pump from walmart (less than 10 bucks), cut the leads off of it, take the pump out, or leave it in ( you can buy a project box at Radio Shack and a switch, or use the one that came with it), and then put in a Li Ion or Lipoly battery (very lite weight), and you've got a portable rechargeable air pump.
Those that are really creative will put a pressure switch on it, and install it onboard the aircraft :) I've played with these things over and over again for fun. Lots of variations. |
RE: Hand held air pump...From TBM
sean, can you show us what kind of cheap air pump you mean, from Walmart ?

Thats cool ! can you do a detailed write up on modifying one of these ?
Also, which lipo did you use and how much does this thing pull amp wise ? |

All batteries that are in my jets get replaced about every two years, and go into other non flying duties. This particular battery is from an electric jet that never got to, and while worried that eventually the battery would go on its own, why not put it into some sort of service. This one is a 11.1 volt three cell, about 1800 mah as I recall. Certainly good for all day use and then some. The box you see above, all that is inside is the pump and a battery, wired through a switch, with a charging lead and air hose coming through to the outside. The idea is to connect the box to your fueler, so it's always there ready to go.
Eventually I'll have the fueler and pump running off the same power source, all in time my friend. |

I tried a Vector, but it came with bad batteries that lasted for about 2 refills before recharge, and those refills took about 2 minutes each.....
Back to my Campbell-Hausfeld box......I like them, but too much screwing around getting the right fitting on them.....I don't like the standard auto valve spring loaded fittings as I have busted mounts using them.....plus they were over 5 years old..... But recently found an excellent hand inflator that comes with digital pressure pre-sets, no less..... Sears #9-11586....price last week was $35.99 locally Requires a Sears generic 19.2 volt hand tool battery #9-11375 at $29.95 and a charger #9-11041 if you don't have one ( I did for my Skil Saw) which goes for $29.99 for the 1 hour charge model..... Very powerful......still strong after 3 days of flying with no recharge....pumps a large airtank from empty to 120 in about 15 seconds.....not sure what the aHr rating of the pack is, but it's the same pack as used on other Sears heavy duty hand held tools....I would guess at least 2.0 aHr... It comes with multiple fittings, but I used the basketball inflator to KISS....it fits very tightly compared to the Vector I had.....I cut it off to 3/8" and slipped standard 1/8" airline tubing over it.....no tapping or threading of any kind needed.....Then in the aircraft, I exclusively use the Schader/Clippard valves, either generic or the ones private branded by BVM.....no need for any screw-on or clamp on fitting....just stick the blunt end of the 1/8" tubing into the orifce....excellent seal....and pump it up...... For an extra $5.40, you can extend the 1 year warranty to 2 years, no question asked exchange at any Sears store in the U.S..... |

Has anyone used one of these? I have two of them in my boomer. One for brakes, other for retracts. They are made of brass, have the built in check valve, and you only need a 10-32 to 1/16th barb fitting which cost like $1.00 form them. I have used them some and have had no issues with them. For about $5 they seem to be pretty good little valves. I assume they are like BVM fillers, except these are brass and not alum. Tad heavier.
Any one have any expreience with these? |
RE: Hand held air pump...From TBM
I have had good service from two Vector air pumps. One of the ends finally wore out and i spliced in a BVM style screw on tip and it still pumps fine over a year now.I do like that sears one in Toms post, it will be my next pump when these vectors burn out.

Couldn't find the inflator under the number you supplied 315.115860 but found it under number 9-11586 and the charger part # 9-11041 It's getting close to cookie time.[sm=tongue_smile.gif] |

Hi Bob-O:
Sears has that double # system......I gave the # on the box, but my store receipt lists the 9-11586 #.......and the #9-11042 charger has been superseded by the #9-11041...... Janey and Emma Jane already have the secret super-chocolate batter made up and in the freezer.......[sm=kiss.gif] |

Rick, bagostix, has the neatest pump ever for sale. Been using one for about a year, and it works great. Charge every month or so. Bob

B-58..that is the one they are bashing here. Like i said, i have two of them (vector) and they work great.

RE: Hand held air pump...From TBM
Actually, my Vector still gets used......to blow up the kids swimming pool and air matresses.....:D
I just use the external 12v plug into my field charging battery.....works great..... Yeah.....the one Rick sold was a Vector that he did a nice job on with tapped fittings, rather than the hose arrangement it came with.... |

Tom
My old air pump finally gave up the other day and was wondering what to replace it with. Went to Sears and bought one like the one you posted. Thanks for the tip. |
RE: Hand held air pump...From TBM
Hi Bob:
You're gonna like it......if you do use the 1/8" airline tubing like I described, be sure to safety wire it onto the inflator connector.....when it pumps out in the sun, the generated heat and the sun allows enough expansion of the 1/8" tubing to let it slip off the inflator connector at about 100 PSI....I replaced my shortened inflator piece which was too short to properly safety with a full length one, put on 3 safety wires, then did a single wrap with blue plastic 3M fine line tape, and then covered the whole thing with heat shrink tubing.....that way the safety wire ends can't gouge me.....Now it works fine up to 130+ PSI...... |
RE: Hand held air pump...From TBM
Thanks again Tom
Never thought of the safety wire idea. The 1/8th line fits on the needle so snug didn't think it would come off. Never considered the heat build up. |
RE: Hand held air pump...From TBM
Please understand what I have stated as I dont want anyone to think I am bashing the product.... The older vector pumps where great, good operation, good life expectancy. The latest ones we received, which are now produced by Black & Decker, experienced a higher failure rate than what we saw from the units when produced by Vector. Dont know what was changed but, out of 10 units, 4 failed within just a few uses. Perhaps, just a bad batch?!? Dont know, but enough of an issue for me to drop them...

RE: Hand held air pump...From TBM
Todd, that original vector was a good pump and deal, I got the combo kits with the lights or the airpumps and gave some as christmas gifts. I think they were $28 each. Mine did fail and it was a broken wire to the motor, obvious bad solder joint. Fixed and has been back in service for a long time now.
How about having Sean, myself or one or some of the guys, design a pump and market it through dreamworksRC? I could see a tight little metal project box with a button switch and a charge jack. Just a female air output with options for adaptor for whatever kind of use people have. I use TomCook air fill valves so I would only need a male nipple for the hose, someone might need different for BVM or clippard. Paint and logo. hmmm. !~)> jOe |
RE: Hand held air pump...From TBM
5 Counting mine. Is it something I can fix. I got 80 PSI out of my Vector the first try, on the gear door tank, but the secont time it topped in at 40 PSI. for the LG tank. Oh well I can use the other Low pressure High volume part to cool down the jet after a flight. |

RE: Hand held air pump...From TBM
I fixed the vector air Compressor. and it is not difficult to do.
If yours quits appilying more than 30 lbs of air . 1 seperate the case. 2 remove the Black Plastic end tip , By removing the 2 Gold irridate screws. 3 remove the modified O ring. inside the black plastic end piece. 4 Appily an O-Ring lube to it. and turn it around. and put it back in. ( or get a New one) I turned it round. 5 reinstall the tip. 6 put the case halves back togather. 7 It should work. Mine now works Great. I was impressed how nice the piston and sleeve were. |
