Ducted fan sound
 

I would say if you think the sound of a gnat with its ass on fire sounds great then by all means you will love the sound of a ducted fan!

Seriously, if you want to hear ducted fans those old SKS tapes have tons of them. If you happen to be in the Phila, PA area stop by and I'll give you all my old ones (tapes that is, I don't have any ducted fans!)

They are a video company that does tapes of various model competitions and shows, crash videos, etc. They run ads in the various model magazines.

I absolutely LOVE the sound of ducted fans! That's actually what got me hooked on them in the first place. Kinda like a nice scream sound when they go by at full bore!

I don't mean to offend anyone but I personally could never stand the sound of ducted fans so I've never owned one. It's funny, I was exactly in mss88's boat a few years ago, curious as to what ducted fans sounded like. I watched a few SKS tapes and was turned off to ducted fans pretty quick. There were; however, a few turbines on those old tapes, now those I liked! After going to Florida Jets I was pretty much hooked.

As a step up to turbines I think ducted fans are an unnecessary expense. There is no legal requirement to fly one. They are usually too noisy for most fields. Anyone who can fly a fast sport plane and/or a Quickie 500 or fast Diamond Dust can fly a BobCat, TopCat or HotSpot, the main difference is turbine lag. I distinctly remember the thought as I flew my HotSpot the first time how half the guys in my club could fly it easily. As far as retractable gear is concerned it's a non-issue, beginners can just leave it down for the first few flights.

I remember when I was getting started in jets I was lucky to know a few of the more down-to-earth guys in the RC jet hobby. I already had a fair amount of RC flying experience like yourself and they advised me that ducted fans would be a waste of time and money. In my case I just got a Diamond Dust with the model aircraft equivalent of a Ford 427 on the nose, logged my high-speed flying and was on my way. My first HotSpot flight was a total non-event.

Like I said in the other post, I really think a lot of RC jet guys let this stuff go to their heads. Heck, there are 12 year old kids flying model jets. Entry level jets are nothing more than a model airplane with a different source of power, that's all! I have no idea why guys make such big deal out of this stuff. There is nothing stopping a beginner from buying a 33% Hangar 9 Cap 232 ARF and plowing it into a car or worse on his first flight. Model jets are no more dangerous than giant scale aerobatic planes and yet there is no "Giant Scale Pilot's Organization" concocting a bunch of Mickey Mouse training schemes and checkout profiles. Like I said, we are flying model airplanes here, not issuing type ratings for Airbus A320's. That's why I think the AMA needs to allow buddy box flying and checkouts on the buddy box for model jet flyers.

Well said, I would have to agree to some point. Do you have anny knowledge of the TGA F-15? What do you think of that jet for Ducted Fan. Of coures I would love to get a turbine jet but there is no reason for me to be spending 3000.00 + on engine.

This is my way of getting into the hobby. Loud or not, my fellow club members will just have to deal with it. If I pay my $50.00 yearly dues, I will go by there rules and fly whatever I want and not care about how loud it is.

I also agree a lot of people make a big deal out of this and I can understand because that's probably the only thing they have to do. I'm 31 years old, play golf, have a wonderful family and work as an Network Engineer for a Telecommunications company. SO I have lots to do other than this hobby. This will be something to do to keep my sanity from all the other aspects of life. I think that's good for the soul.

TGA F-15
 

I have no personal experience with it but I seem to recall reading good things about the TGA F-15 in this forum and back at the rconline jets forum. I'm sure if you post a thread on it you'll get lots of info back on it. A search would surely yield some good info.

No question about it, RC jets will help you keep your sanity if this crazy forum doesn't cause you to lose it first! All kidding aside, I love flying my HotSpot jet. There really is nothing quite like the sight and sound of that thing blasting through a brilliant blue sky; it really is quite addicting! If you are anything like me you won't be able to get enough of it, and that can be a real problem with a wife and young kids. I've yet to figure out how some of these guys get out as often as they do. If you've got any ideas let me know!

Man I totally agree. I have a Hangar 9 33 % Cap 232 and it has a 32 oz GASOLINE tank in it mounted about 6" behind a twin cyl engine that operates at probably 400 degrees F. If this hit a house............

TGA F-15,
The TGA f-15 is a great flying jet, doesn't matter if it's Byrobalster, Dynamax, or Turbine powered. They are great from grass, especially with the Byron, too.

Builds to about 12 lbs ready to go. The new ones can be as scale as you want to make them.

Hey!! Its coming along, would have been done if I would quit getting side tracked on other stuff!! Still waiting for the dang wheels and brakes to come yet:( Otherwise I have all I need! I am going to get cracking on it again and get it done!!!
