Not really a problem, just a concern if you are really picky.
The paint flakes off the Servo Hatches. Dont think are Chinese friends used any etching primer on the plastic!!!! All in all great kit, I flew mine once last weekend, and off to a UK jet meet this week. I fitted the XL Jet-1A legs and retracts, Needs a little mod to the hardwood bearers and the Firbeglass Tunnel. Didnt want to wat till the Elan Jet-1A,s came out. |

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
On my new Elan the retract mounting rails seem very narrow. I don't have the retracts yet that I will install but the actual mounting rails seem too narrow.
You guys that have received your Elan's...your's narrow too? It doesn't look like there will be enough rail to mount the retracts without cutting into the fuse. |
RE: Elan Has Arrived!
In reply to Henk, I'm sorry that I can't give you the colour number for the servo mounts. The factory make up the paint to an exact match for the grey Profilm (Orocover).
I have been nagging them regarding the lack of good priming for some time now and will be having another go in November when I visit China again. They do such a great job on the main painting but the servo mounts are a self lubricating plastic surface, I believe, so trickier to paint. I understand that it's a small but irritating point, and I will get it taken care of! A coat of fuel proofer or clear coat over the paint before it chips will improve the stability of the paint on that plastic. Synthetic.....The retract rails are wider than they look and extend about another 4 to 5mm (3/16") under the wing skin surface each side. The moulding overlaps the rails, which makes them appear narrow. Alan |
RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Alan, there are some small white self-stick "dougnuts" suplied with the kit. There are approximately 3/4" od and 1/4" id. I probably missed it in the instructions, but where do these go? There are 8 or so of these in a small plastic pack THANKS

RE: Elan Has Arrived!

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Just back from the local paintshop!
Like Alan said it's not a RAL number! I told the man my problem and in an eye wink he started to mix some paint for me! He did a great job it is exactly the right colour:D I will remove the old china paint this evening and will apply a primer tomorrow, so on saterday they will be as new again!!!!:D:D |
RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Geh3............ The little self adhesive rings are to tidy up the holes you must cut through the covering where the fixing bolts pass through wings and tail. If you do a neat job you may not need to use them. Your option.

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Wow, I will have to say I am extremely pleased with the paint job and overall quality of this ARF. I have owned 3 other manufacture's ARF's and this is equal to or better than any of them.

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
After a couple of hours of cleaning paint out of the spar and anti-rotation holes in the fuse and booms and lapping the wing tubes, I have both booms and the right side wing fitted to pretty much a slip fit ...yet still a little on the tight side.

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
The instructions show 6 holes in the fuse but the fuse only has 5. Where do you recommend routing the wires and air tubing?

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Had originally thought out of the retract's I had on hand, that the Spring Air 400 series would be the best fit. After looking closer at the Robart 630 frame design, I decided it was the better option. A couple of minutes with the belt sander and a course file along with a rotozip bit in the dremel quickly had the Robart 630 fitting like a glove.

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Countryboy ,
Did you have to "cut down" the metal on the retracts to get them to fit the retract rails? I have not started on my Elan yet but I did attempt to run the wing tube through the fuse but it wouldn't start in the first hole I tried in the fuse. I hope I don't have to spend hours getting the wing tube to fit correctly. Thanks for the pictures and build progress report. Don |
RE: Elan Has Arrived!
What paint or primer works well on the servo covers... I have the military version that is grey and the pait peels easily from there, I was thinking of using an auto type primer!

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Alan,
Can you tell us which retracts you used for the Elan in the new video? Was it the Robart retracts which Patricia is selling? Also, I'd like to hear any opinions on which retracts might be the lightest... |
RE: Elan Has Arrived!
@ geh3 you can use a automotive 1K plastic primer works great i have done my hatches this afternoon!
Tomorrow i wil apply a 2 K layer;) |

Other than that, no other mods necessary. I think you will find that you will have to spend some time cleaning out the paint from the spar tube sockets as well as the openings for the anti-rotation pins. I used a mixture of permagrit tools along with a lapping tool which I made from a piece of hardwood dowel with a wrap of sandpaper on one end, and the other end of the dowel cut down to fit in a cordless 3/8 drill. I found that the spar tubes in the wing and also the tubes that accept the anti-rotation pins did not line up exactly with the holes in the root rib. When I would try to slide the wing on ( even after cleaning the paint out) the wing would slide so far and then try to bind up. I simply chamfered the outside edge of all the holes in the wing root rib.. |
RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Thanks CB,
I have just been out working on the Elan and I too had problems with the tube and the anti-rotation pins. One of the wooden blocks that hold the "hidden nut" that the anti-rotation pins screw into also came loose inside the fuse and will have to be re-glued back in. I think I will Hysol all them since the one came loose. I have Jet 1A's coming for mine and I really don't want to grind the retracts down to fit the rails and I also really don't want to dig into the Elan fuse. I am hoping that the Jet 1A's will drop right in on the rails since they are being made special to fit the Elan. Don |
