Kit for a Turbine Trainer?
 

Hi all

Winter is approaching fast and I am looking for a winter project.
As I am addicted to fast planes (I fly a plane powered by a OS 91VF with APC 10x10 at the moment and that goes really fast! :D) I now would like to try a jet.

Does anyone know a good quality kit for a JetCat 80 size turbine? No ARTF please.

PS: As I am new to that turbine business, one more questions:

Are turbines with Kerosine start (no more gas required) reliable, I mean, does that really work well?

The best two turbine trainer kits would have to be the Jetmach 60 or the Reaction 54. Hard to go wrong with either of these two.

Bruce Tharpe does not recommend the P80 for the Reaction54. Two other wood kits I can think of are the A10 and the DV8TOR. I'm not sure which size turbines go into these two.

another good kit for the p-80 would be a Facet 2300. it's an all balsa and plywood, with foam core wings


i have one and they will fly off of anything.

FW190pilot, thanks, but the JetMach 60 is overpowered with a P-70 so I would not recommend it for a P-80.

What about the "Turbinator"?

As Mark mentioned already, The Facet 2300 would be a great choice for the P80.

Might look at this. They suggest P120 but it might make due with P80. Think its from UK.

A Facet 2300 is perfect for a P80. I have one and my buddy has one too. Both are powered with a JetCat P80.

Ziroli plans has the Turbinator as a plan or short kit for a 12 - 16 pound turbine.:

The P-80 seems to be lost between the small engines & the large ones as far as available airframes is concerned,
the P-70 may be a better bet even if it is a bit more expensive.

The DV8R is no longer available, I scratch built a slightly smaller version for a Wren Super Sport. - John.

Oh my God! It seems I am really spoiled for choice here. [sm=spinnyeyes.gif]
I did not know that there are so many trainers on the market.

I must say that I really fancy the Thundertail from RBC and at 209Euro you really can't go wrong. I also like the Valkyrie.

The Facet2300 looks very nice too but is that plane available in Europe?

Turbine wise I am planning to buy a Frank turbine, probably the TJ-67 with 90N thrust. Should be the right turbine for any trainer you recommended.

Ulrich, my guts tells me that you will be happy with the Dv8tor if you can find one, I'm sure you can but as back up plan getting yourself a Turbinator, if you really like to build Mr: Ziroli really makes them easy to build, the Dv8tor is big and the P-80 will push it just fine but it will not be a hot vertical zipy faster on the othe hand the Turbinator been an over all weight of 22/24 Lbs the P-80 should be more than enough to get your heir standing by the performance of it.

Hi Ulrich!

If you are buying a Frank-turbine, you might want to look for soemthin with a huge fuselage and enough fuel-capacity. From my experience the Frank turbines have a higher fuel consumption. I flew my Roo with a P-80 and a Frank TJ-67 and had to cut the flight-time by 30%....

I highly recommend a small 80N turbine. Go for a Booster 80+, JetCat P-70 or a Wren Super Sport. They have lots of power, but are smalla t the same time. So they will easily fit in almost everything around.

I would recommend two jet trainers:

1. The Reaction R54. The kit is perfect, comes complete with all hardware and everything. Great construction and perfecter flyer. Knife-edge over 400m, perfect slow-rolls, goes well over 200km/h and lands as slow as your Trainer 40 :D. It is completely wood and there are chances to do some individual things. Have look at the R54 thread or use the Index to that thread on www.btemodels.com

2. PAF Sting. PAF is a german company and they have a few nice jets on their webside. The Sting is a kit with fiberglass fuselage and foam-wings/stabs. It is a real builders kit, but for that reason a cheap alternative to the Bandits out there. Looks really nice and flies pretty fast on a P-60. If you want to fly real fast, one of the above mentioned turbines will fit easily. Mine weights in at less than 8kg tow. It is really quick and aerobatic. With full flaps it comes in for landing like a *****-cat. I was really impressed by the first flights.

interesting info about the Frank turbine. Anyone else out there who had the same experience?
I think I have to change my mind about what turbine to go for. Probably the Wren.
