Weathering Made Easy.........And Quick Too

1 Attachment(s)
outside of my aviation career I'm also a cabinet contractor and glazing cabinets has always been a very time consuming job as is weathering a plane. about two years ago i picked up a then new product that cut the time on a set of cabinets down from 3-4 days to 1/2 a day. i used it on several projects and in all honesty i wouldn't use any other form of distressing/glazing anymore.

i decided to give it a go on an old composite wing i had laying in my garage. normally you spray the glaze on cabinets, it hazes over about as quick as you spray it to keep it from burning into the finish to deeply and then you use a Scotch Brite to buff it off leaving all details behind. i wiped the wing down good with alcohol to clean it, used a stain rag to rub the glazing on and then after about 5 min of elbow grease with the Scotch Brite it looked pretty darn good.

it's designed to burn into the under lying finish to an extent but the more you rub the more you can take back off, when you get to your desired look you blow it off with an air hose and clear coat it. it's called [link=http://www.mlcampbell.com/pages/starpage.asp?star=AMG]Amazing Glaze[/link] and it's pretty amazing to work with.

if you spray it on, rather then using a wipe rag, it'll turn out more even without streaks, i really didn't want to clean the gun just for a test run :)

Does it come in a dirtier brownish color?

it comes in allot of colors and they will even custom blend your color if needed. I'll dig out the paperwork our rep gave me on the stock colors, the above is 'Lamp Black'

It filled in the panel lines nicely too. Does it need clear over it or will the finish hold up to a few kero spills?

it's lacquer based and will hold up somewhat, but it's designed to 'rub off' and without the clear coat to seal it it will continue to be rubbed off when anything is rubbed over it aggressively.

Ian, that's the compliment wing to the one that buckled in flight so it's not hardly a new one :)

Great subject,
Rubbing in a front to back motion with the scotch pad gives a windstream effect for wind distressing.
