The Turbo is flying again, I installed a Jeti receiver since that's what flys my models now, it took a bit to learn the basics but here we are now, flying my models with it.

The remaiden started yesterday, as usual everything works at home but at the field somethings don't, yesterday, just before sunset I was able to give it the proper checks at the field + one more check because of the gyro build into the receiver, today I just needed to do a bit more programing on the radio and it was ready to go.

The TO was amazingly short, I felt comfortable flying it around, throttle position was around 2/3, the thrust angle of the engine was build per the plans and it seems to be the correct angle for the 19 lbs thrust P80, I haven't see it climb when flown from 2/3 throttle to full throttle and accelerating, the flaps produce an immense amount of drag, I'm finding out that I don't have to do long approaches, if I do I end up adding a tad of thrust to help it make the runway so, closer approaches next flights, the smoke system is working just fine, the fluid was syphoning at the end of the sprayer because of the tank been above the sprayer, I added a Sullivan one way check valve and it seems to have solved that problem.

I added 1/2" of crow and it is helping big time, on my second landing for the day just before touchdown I had the nose of it so high that I thought it was going to tip stall, it didn't.

Field report.

Took the Turbo to it's first jet meet, it got to fly a couple of times, on the second flight the engine stopped ( no smoke ) it was in an excellent position to do a partial downwind, base and final legs to a normal landing, I was breading heavily ( of course ) but I knew all was going to be ok and it did.

On the ground, I found out that the ECU stopped the engine because of a failsafe, on a more detailed examination, the radio/receiver were cleared from the problem, the signal and quality of the link between the radio and receiver was strong, I now have to look between the receiver and ECU, everything else in this jet is working solid, I'm starting to enjoy this build, my Boomer was my go to jet, I will be making the Turbo my go to from now on, hopefully I will be able to show on vids the performance of this all around wood jet

I will be flying it again this Thursday and hopefully clear the failsafe deal, we have another jet meet coming up in two weeks, it should be fun again 😁

Best looking TURBINATOR I've seen, Carlos!

CARS II 10-28-2020 12:59 PM

Thank you Bob.

Hope all is good on your side.

CARS II 10-29-2020 04:32 PM

I went to the field to workout the failsafe, I told a friend about the problem and where I should be looking for the problem, he looked at the ECU throttle cable where it enters the ECU and look at what we found.

The Turbinator has flown again with the fixed ECU, all went well.

CARS II 12-05-2020 06:30 PM

Flew again today, all good and beginning to enjoy this airplane, during one of the landings I was aiming for the first 1/4 of the runway, it touchdown a little hard and it bounced, on the bounce I saw the right wheel hanging, landed on the right strut, no serious damage, just a few marks under the right tip where it touched the runway, during the inspection of the strut I noticed it was missing a spring out of two, the strut piston has a clamp the has two set screws that I never saw before, they were loose, found the spring, put it all back together and was ready to fly again but the engine couldn't spool up because the propane was too cold to expand, end of flying today.

Next flying session will be with the Reaction, it is Kero start and the cold temps will not affect the start up sequence.

CARS II 12-05-2020 06:36 PM

Now that the Turbo has proven itself, it's time to finish those little things that needs completion.

CARS II 01-15-2021 07:01 AM

I got two flights on my Turbinator yesterday, one good landing and one perfect landing, the flying was awesome, with the cold temps the airplane and engine are performing really good, the smoke is nice and thick, I'm using aviation smoke fluid, it looks very white and it remains in the air for a long time.

I got about 6 flights since the ECU throttle cable was fix by swapping that board with the new one with pins, so far, is all happy faces 😁😁

Hi Carlos,

Looks great& glad you had a chance to take her into sky, :o

Keep well,

Javad,

CARS II 01-15-2021 08:15 AM

Sure :)

This is how the guys saw it, a good landing, landed on the runway, plane stopped at the end of the runway, all tires touched down at the same time, plane came back as it left on TO.

A perfect landing, the approach speed was good, lined up with the center of the runway, final rotation came about two feet on the runway, the nose of the airplane came up then it slowed down on its own for a touchdown on the main gear, nose down, let it roll to slow down on its own then apply brakes for a second, turn around and taxi back, happy face from there on :)

I'm no expert and I'm still trying to do good landing as much as possible, it doesn't happen all the time, that's why when I build it I made sure the gear mounts were big and strong.

It is always good to have a flying by body with you couching you on the landings, that helps big time, specially if you have flown for decades ( we tend to develop bad habits )

CARS II 01-15-2021 08:25 AM

Thank you Javad.

We had an excellent flying day yesterday, sunny and warm.

Be safe and healthy.

Cold for us Westerners ( Cali people ) is anything below 55°, I'm sure that you are laughing big right now :))
