That's interesting. I would have never thought about the acceleration from the cat causing the slats to retract until I watch the video. COOL!

This planes where A4k´s survivors of the Kwait air force during the Irak invasion, in 1990.. they fled out during the occupation, and later where sold to Brazil.. later, we bought a french
carrier, the Foch wich was renamed Sao Paulo, to substitute the smaller and aging Minas Gerais wich was used with helicopters and Grumman Trackers anti sub planes wich was inadequate to operate the Skyhawks...

Yes, this slats are mechanically (and automatically) activated when the air speed is low enough... Ed Heynemann (the Skyhawk designer) was the first to use this device in a delta wing.. this system was used in airplanes as old as the Messerchmidt 109!

And as U.Joe said it is common to the Brazilian airplanes doing training catches in U.S. Carriers, as well from other nations too, and vice versa....

I nearly slammed my face into the instrument panel of the A-4 during my first trap many moons ago. OOOhhhh look at the shiny bounching ball......wow that ship is tiny........(think girl from impanema song playing in my head).....HEY STUPID....wake up...wake up .....Ooohh sssssshheeeeeeeeetttttt.........water water water water steel steel steel steel.....SLAM WHAT THE.....spectacles....testacles....wallet and watch.......


WOOO HOOO....that was COOOL

I might need a couple more quarters for this ride!!!! LOL

Cool! Takes me back to MCAS EL TORO about 1982. VMA-214, MAG-13. And the OA4-M's attatched to MCAS KANEOHE BAY HAWAII 1986. Love them Scooters.
