Is this too close?

Guys, need to fit a smoke tank to this build and this BVM tank was supplied as an 'option', the turbine above is an AMT Olympus, but as I have no idea on heat radiation can someone give me any clues as to whether this set up is going to be too close.

I could apply a heat shield material to the tank top, and even layer on some BVM ceramic heat blanket as well......

marcs.

Any feedback ?????

use isolation it will get hot specialy on ground idle when there not much airflow thru the fuselage.
paint it with some BVM,s magic White stuff
al,s sells it.

Marc,

Bit tricky to see how the tank lines up with the turbine? Is the rear of the tank level with the exit cone? The front part of the turbine won't get that hot so get the tank as far forward as poss. Maybe move the turbine back a little if it hasn't been mounted yet?

But as Sandor said, BVM heatproof paint and/or cermaic blanket should work OK but I would look to move the tank entirely if it is underneath the tailcone.

Rgds,
Mark

RE: Is this too close?

Guys currently the back of the tank sits about 3" short of the tailpipe exit, so a small portion of it is below the point where the turbine reduces down in diameter to the cone area, and the turbine is unlikely to be moved now as the tailpipe dictates its position.

I am not totally happy with it, but if protecting it will work then this might have to do[:o]

I was looking into custom tanks but they seem very expensive........................ how easy are they to make? Any offers out there?

just do some testflights with a empty tank and look for discolouration.
if i remember correct kerosene boils at about 75 celcius at msl? then it gets spectacular.
but the position is tricky.
cant you use a drop tank?
or use a duct around the engine?

Digi, the tank is for smoke fuel, so will contain diesel or something similar - I guess the flash point of diesel is somewhat higher than Kerosene?

Well, if it's for smoke fuel then it doesn't matter if it lights up - you'll just get the best smoke system ever :D :D

Hope that helped [8D]

Which of BVM's tanks is this one. This looks like a good idea! What plane is it mounted into?

pfffffffff

and your worried about putting a smoke oil tank?
i thought you had a bandit there or something..[:-]

ps: i got 3 gallons of Blue smoke here..
with your color you wont see the spoil anyway..

Heatshield or a ceramic blanket would be only marginally effective. You need to reflect heat away from the tank while still allowing for a maximum air gap between the two. Stick some aluminum tape on the tank closest to the engine. Start where it lines up with about the middle of the engine case to the back of the tank.

Now you've started me thinking..... three smoke tanks, three pumps, three colours RED - WHITE - GREEN now that would be something:D

Seriously, its a customers jet so wanted to make sure its not going to cause a problem, would you run with it if it was yours?

seriously think about summer
dark blue in the sun
45 celcius not running
80 celcius when running....
i would put a ducting around that engine
AND add a heat blanket or the paint from uncle bob$ shop

RE: Is this too close?

I think heat blanket will keep the heat away, my EuroSport has a 160 and I have heat blanket wrapped around a single walled pipe it keeps the fuselage cool. With the air gap you have it separates the heat-to be sure paint the tank in heat shield.
