The Eagle Has Landed!
Just received my Regal Eagle in the mail :D . Looking over the plans I see that for a Byron fan setup the engine is mounted on its side. All the pics I have seen show the engine mounted upright similar to a tractor. Also, with the Byron fan a "cheater hole" is shown. Any body flying a Regal Eagle built "per plan?" I'm reading and saving all the tips I've read. Any comments will be appreciated. Engine will be an OS 77/Byron fan. Thanks.

I flew one of these back in 1984. I used a Byron fan unit with a Rossi .81. Engine was mounted upright and the pipe went into the upper part of the fuselage. That was back when the fuse was all balsa. It worked good and flew well for what it was. I remember going throught the speed traps with the gear in the wells at 108 mph, and 107 with the gear down. I have a "craftman" kit. I build the fuse out of 3/16" balsa so I guess the way you did it will work. Did you use a hatch? |

He used to have a fiberglass top hatch and bottom hatch in hte kit. My guess is it is now plastic. I cut a hatch from the engine mount bulkhead forward about 8 inches. With that I could acess the engine and pipe. I may still have the video tape laying around. I will look for it and see. If I find it I will send it to you for the cost of shipping if you are interested. It wasn't the most professional tape, but it did take you through most of hte construction.

Thanks for the hatch tip. My kit comes with the moulded top pieces. I'll use your measurements for the hatch. I also have the video with it. I'll be checking it out tonight. Thanks again. *rcnats* Stan |

Here is a pic of my RE, I chose not to put the cheater hole in the bottom. I could just envision it sucking up something and destroying the fan, or worse. I have a hatch on the top. The hatch is the width of the fiberglass top piece, and long enough to get the fan housing out turned sideways. I had originally put a hole in the hatch for cooling air to the engine head, it wouldn't get up enough speed to lift off. I removed the hatch, and it went right up, so that is how I fly it now. Mine was an older kit, with fiberglass top, bottom & rear cone.
