I am currently trying to design a model rocket which deploys wings and activates an engine while in flight. In essence, becoming a airplane UAV after reaching a certain height.

However, I do need some help on deploying the wings and what kind of engine I should use. We need one that can be started via some kind of automated system.

The weight of the "plane" will probably be around 30-50 lbs. The plane itself will have a cylindrical fuselage, nose cone, 2 wings that will deploy, and 4 stabilizers in the back aranged in a star pattern. (they will double as stabilizers during launch. Also, the fuselage will be atleast 5-7" in diameter

I was told in the Begineer forum to post this again here, and to ask you guys about possible ways of deploying the wings.

Why not have a servo pin lock the wings aft until you are ready to deploy them then a simple spring loaded system will work, just do it before you reach max altitude and the stall will assist the spring, make sure you have a positive lock when deployed!
BTW, I have seen this system work before.

Do you have your NAR or Tripoli High Power certifications? For the weight you ate projecting, you will need a minimum of a J class motor, more likely a K or L. For any of these motors, you need a High Power Level 2 Certification and for anything above a J570, you will also need a BATF Low Explosives User's Permit, unless you go with a hybrid.

After May the 23rd thanks to the Homeland Security Act, you will need a BATF for anything over a G motor. Secondly, shipping thanks the the same act will be suspended by all carriers for all rocket motors including Estes little stuff. They decided not to ship anything qustionable like rocket motors. I have an 18' Rocket that will probably never see the sky again thanks to the Homeland Security Act. The real hassle is the inspections the ATF makes several times a year. It just isn't worth it when you take into account the BATF annual cost as well as an annual $300 fee to the State of Illinois, plus the Tripoli insurance of $75.00 on top of all that! You still haven't bought a rocket motor yet.

Rocketry is a much smaller group of individuals. We got the AX and the Homeland Security Dept is taking a hard look at my other hobby now. R/C aircraft! If they do the same to Model Aviation...
