What color is best?
 

Got a question for all you speed freaks. What color or colors would you say have the best visability from a far. Also has anyone used high intensity lights in say the leading edge for orientation?

I say yellow but I feel that you should always know the orientation of the aircraft without relying on color. If you have to use color to know where you are in the air then you are not ready to fly fast aircraft.

Primary colors by far IMO. Yellow, Blue, Red above all. My Kingcat was red, yellow, blue, and I could see it comfortably WAY OUT THERE. Sport jets IMO, should be in Sport colors, for FUNNNNNNNN!

ymmv, especially if you are color blind :D

How many flights you think you can get in a day with that? [X(]

I'm sure military people with far more experience/resources than we have thought about exactly the same thing.

Bright orange tips on the base colour seems to be what they have come up with. It works for me. - John.

Yeah I agree, the orange to me seems to show up more than a bright yellow especially if it is outlined in a darker color.

If Its on a FIREBIRD any color will be a blur. Kinda like fox broadcasting hockey games when they used it to hi lite the puck a DAY GLO BLUR .....:D:D

Tell me about it.......Dodge Viper Red....still have a half gallon of that stuff. May use it to highlight the leading edges.

Orange and white on top, any dark color in the underside... this works in blue or grey skies, and it is outstanding at the end of the day.

I'm down with the Outback, It's the Oakley Blade wear'n, racquetball play'n kangaroo I'm not too sure of. :)

Any bright colour as long as the top is different to the bottom. The big checks work for me.

Hey Scrimp Daddy, I found that the color is not as important but the layout is. Here is a picture of my FedEx Stiletto, I can see it coming from a mile away. The stripes on the wings is the most important, and if you can break up the fuse with two different shades (lite/dark) then that helps as well.

But hands down the best plane to see was my T-6. The stripes on the wings worked great, and seeing that they wrapped around to the bottom of the wing and stopped just behind the leading edge you can see it coming at you very well and still allowed you to distinguish between top and bottom.

The biggest trick is to use contrasting colors.
To see if the colors that you want to use are contrasting, Take a picture of the colors next to each other with your digital camera set to black and white. If the colors have good contrast in B&W then they will have good contrast/visibility in the air.

I went a little extreme on this racer, but I did fly it late in the evening and landed it pretty much at night and could still see it. I don't like the scheme, but it worked visually.
