HELP!!! for OS .91 and Grass
if you can find one, a DL Aeromodels "Cyclone DF" that was my first DF and it was great.
Other good ones, Y/A Starfire (most Y/A jets actually) TG Mig 29 TG F15 Parkinson Regal Eagle, Cheetah, (and they have another that I can't remember the name of) these are all reasonably priced and good fliers from what I know and have seen :D |
HELP!!! for OS .91 and Grass
The best advise for a jet on grass is dont. Do real jets take off on grass? Models shouldnt either.

Jets on grass
I have flown 2 of the planes mentioned by Jeremy earlier off of grass. The Regal Eagle and the Starfire (mine was a JMP version). I have also operated a Byron F-16 off of grass.
Slightly oversize tires and a positive ground stance are the 2 main things you need, although the Starfire I flew had stock sized tires on it. Most of Russia's jet fighters were designed to be used off of unimproved (grass) fields. FOD is a big concern with flying jets off of grass, full scale and models. |
HELP!!! for OS .91 and Grass
thanks for the good advise guys, has anyone had experience with the TGA interceptor off of grass?
DJ, FYI, I have a strong passion for jets and there are no nice paved fields in my area, that's why I asked the question I have had 5 ducted fan jets in the last 2 years and do to the lack of a good flyign field I have had nothing but bad luck. Of course real jets don't fly off grass, but the also don't fit in the back of cars, have piston engine's turning a fan, or or have retracts that operate off of compressed air but that doesn't stop most people from flying them, have a heart man.... HELP!!! for OS .91 and Grass
I have never flown any of my BVM DF jets (Sabre and Viper) off hard runways. I only ever had access to grass fields. Our field was 300 feet of close mown grass.
Taking off was never a problem. The problem for me was landing without running into the weeds. I have a box full of broken BVM retract parts. Then I discovered aluminium retracts. regards |

Mugenkid,
Well-put. |
HELP!!! for OS .91 and Grass
In all honesty, I prefer to fly off of grass when I can, it's way easier on wheels, and at the cost of jet tires, I'd like them to last as long as possible.
Our field is about 600' x 600' (2 runways) but right now unfortunately it's really rough. I have access to paved runways, which is good. The other benefit to grass is, when you come in for those nice nose high landings, or crosswind landings, and you scrape the tail or anything grass won't chew the paint up immediately. |

RE: HELP!!! for OS .91 and Grass
Hi Michael,
If you do not see a particular jet fly from grass,at least on video do not believe it. Bob Parkinson Models will send you a free video showing that jets can fly off rough grass, any field that your prop airplane can. E-mail [email protected] for free video. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery as we post office from Canada. Bob Parkinson. |

The best advise for a jet on grass is dont. Do real jets take off on grass? Models shouldnt either Bull!!! [:'(] The guy's asking for help, and you post some pompous crap like that!! Lot's of guys prefer grass. That sage advise sounds like it comes from a wealth of experience.[X(] Micheal, I had a Starfire(I bought from Shaun),and it took off in less than 200 ft.The field was well maintained, and the grass short, but it worked fine.Second to my turbine F-15,that was my favorite plane.Very fast, and slowed nicely for landing.Flies like its on rails.Whatever you choose, good luck!![8D] Erik |
RE: HELP!!! for OS .91 and Grass
anything will land on grass, takeoffs are usually the issue ... I have in the past used a glider hi-start to help the plane off rough grass .... I had a George Miller T-38 that would get in the air in around 300' with a OS 91 on a byron fan with the hi-start pulling it to enough speed to rotate and take off ....

Have you got yourself a jet for the engine yet. Just looking at how old the original post was. My spectre with os91 and ramtec fan will get up in about 150ft.

RE: HELP!!! for OS .91 and Grass
Actually I got a good deal on a Honda S2000 a couple of months ago and sold most of my jet stuff, but I should be back into the jet scene here in a couple of months, not sure if I want to invest back in DF or go turbine though... Decisions decisions. I really like the new DV8R that came out. I'm always looking for good advice though so if anyone else wants to reply please feel free.
Best Regards to all |
RE: HELP!!! for OS .91 and Grass
Glad to hear about the 150 feet for the Spectre! I'm building one right now with the OS 91/Dynamax combination. Some say that the Dynamax has a little more static thrust so maybe I can get up in 149 feet :D

RE: HELP!!! for OS .91 and Grass
I've been flying DF jets for years off one of the worst fields out there lol! Check it out, www.korc.ca . Older kits like the Byron F16 are great even on less than perfect grass. I always used a BVM remote mix valve and made sure I was at full RPM on take off. The Top Gun Mig and F15 are also really good grass jets. Use positive incidence on the gear and hold up elevator until you rotate. Kind of like float flying:D
Just read a little futher down the posts. Ya, maybe just get a DV8R. That's what I did and I won't be missing those DF engines! Shaun Bell |
RE: HELP!!! for OS .91 and Grass
Starfire II is great on grass, as are the Byron Mig 15 and F-16
