Insurance Coverage

I was just reviewing my home owners policy and wondered about my coverage.
I have heard that if there was an accident, that this is your primary insurance before AMA gets involved.
My coverage looks light at $300,000 personal liability. I think I should have more coverage. What type of liability limits do you guys have? Does the insurance company generally cover model aircraft incidents? I know I have to call my agent with a question like that but just wanted some opinions on the subject.

300,000 is pretty standard, but these days, probably won't get you too far. You should talk to your agent and see about an umbrella policy to boost your limits ... not so much for the modeling exposure, but for your own protection from other types of liability.

As to coverage, look in section II of the policy (liability) and find the "exclusions" section. Read down until you find the "aircraft" exclusion. Many policies now have specific wording that indicate the term "aircraft" does not include models. If this wording is there, you are ok. If not, call your agent and ask if the aircraft exclusion applies to your models. If they indicate your models are covered, ask for them to drop you a note in writing confirming this fact. If they won't do it, switch companies and find one that will cover modeling activity.

While you are at it, ask your agent if you are covered if you build a model, sell it, and then are sued in a liability suit as the builder of the model.

I spoke to my agent today and yes I am covered while operating my jets. They will put that in writing. I purchased a one million dollar umbrella policy for a very reasonable price. This brings me to one million, three hundred thousand dollars per incident. Then there is the AMA insurance on top of that. I feel much better now.

Yea, but Joe you're worth that much :D If I did that, on the other hand, somebody would get about 100 times more than my net worth if they sued me! :( :)

Congrats Dom. Umbrellas are a great buy because they are relatively cheap ... not often used. But when you need it, you need it, and you will be damn glad you have it.
