Anybody have problems transporting turbine engines as either checked baggage or carry on baggage?? Thanks

none either way....the radio though often gets looked at (tsa wants a function test)...however if you are also carrying kero...that is a problem....much more so than if I am carrying a firearm[X(][X(][X(]

My friend and I bring by carry on two Jent Central turbines from Florida jets to Puerto Rico, they went through the TSA scanner( x-ray) when the agent saw what's inside the case they tooked me apart and asked what's on the case ? , I told that was an R/C model engine . They did some test as usual and then I continued my tripp back to PR

Just make shure is a BRAND NEW ENGINE whitout fuel on it , and put all electronics and the turbine itsefl in a ZIPLOCK bag.

But that was my case, I take the risk and all went fine.

Passed mine trough SFO carry on scanners , some thing as above, they did the ususal swabs around the engine ( engine was runned months before but not recentely ) passed the scan from the swabs, after that as far as they know it is a harmless objet.

Same with me. Travelled many times with a JetCat in a simple plastic bag as hand carry item, with no questions ever asked. Putting the electronics etc in a ziplock bag is a good idea.
Usually, the electronics get more attention than the motor. Happened twice to me they took dust samples from the ECU and battery looking for explosive residues.
Pay attention with telling it's an R/C engine, some airlines (like Singapore Airlines) lately very clearly state that R/C engines (with a drawing of an OS type of combustion engine) are prohibited. (Don't give them a reason to start a whole discussion with you ! ). Most important is that it doesn't smell overly to kerosene, hence carry the turbine in an open plastic bag so it can get maximally rid of the kero smell.
Other airlines say no to LiPo's nowadays when they are not installed (in fact, they are referring to bare Lipo's and mobile phones etc). I would make sure the battery looks "used", i.e. wrapped in bubble foam and taped, with the wires hanging out.
But basically, you should have no problems.

Ehh? a new engine is test run, so whats the difference?

Even though a new turbine is in fact used at least for a test run and will have fuel in it, if you say its new they'll probably assume no fuel has ever touched it. I was flying from DFW to Vancouver with a bunch of students in a university competition ~3 years back, and their 2-stroke OS 91 got turned back... The fuel residue is considered a 'hazardous material'. If it was 'new' it would have flown through the check no problem according to the guy at the counter... They were told to ship it seperately.
