Can you send me the pictures you upload in the units to start the slide show? Are those .jpg images? Once I have made more progress I will drop you a PM. Bela the unit is 2.4" digital photo frame, pic attached of the unit box and the wiring so far. Red/Black are the battery feeds which are nice and easy, the White/Black are the conection to the contact switch which are very tricky to solder, infact all this was done by Rich a friend who has access to some very fine soldering equipment! Will work on the cockpit frames today and will post any progress. marcs |

Although I think I can fit the Coby 1.5" displays, I prefer to try with the uOLED despite their cost. RE: Project MFD..............
I found an article that talks about hacking the coby 151 but it looks like you guys might not need it, heres the link anyway. http://tubetime.us/?p=22
Also, the last time I played falcon flight sim, I think I remember that the mfd views could be orthographic. meaning to say, dead on looking straight at it without any angle or perspective. whats cool about this is that this program has a large variety of dynamic screens and animation from the f-16 and you can use a screen video grab program like FRAPS to capture the anims, convert them to gifs, then shoot them straight to your device for display. This will keep you from having to go the extra steps of designing the graphics or setting up the animations. |
RE: Project MFD..............
You don't even need a screen grab program - just hold down the "Shift"-key and then push the Print Screen"-key at the upper right of your keyboard.
Then you can paste the grabbed screen into any picture or image program. Tor |
RE: Project MFD..............
In the case of the PC21, Pilatus were happy to provide actual screen shots, so no need to source from other media.

with Fraps you will be capturing live video not screengrabs. Lucky you with the Pilatus folks Marc, Lockheed will likely not have the same attitude.

I have posted these before, but here are the images I use for my MFD's - already scaled and angled for the Coby units,
the first 4 for the left MFD, the rest for the right one. Tor |

RE: Project MFD..............
Quite right - to fit the unit in the F-16 cockpit I had to place the units at an angle, and consequently had
to angle the Jpeg's so they were level in the frame inside the cockpit. If you want them "un-angled" I have those lying around as well. They were all taken from the F-16 Falcon 4 flight-sim! Tor |

Hey Bryce!
nice to see you around man. I see you joined the Coby train. ...but ahhhhh whats this? Raptorstuff? are you doing a raptor cock or setting up your viper? |

RE: Project MFD..............
Awesome! The Big Raptor is coming along well. The cockpit will be ultra scale including animated Mfds. The cobys are actually perfectly sized for this cockpit.

Hey All,
i've been helping Marcs with CNC'ing a fes bits here and ther for the PC e's been building, i have also been looking at the screens fr the MFD's, we thought that since he was going to al the effort and Ali's expense to fit the screens, they really need a good frame/bezel round them as per full size. so i have been trying to make a mould so we can make as many as we want, to fit this screen of course. i have a few pictures of the results, the first is of the master i CNC'd into some tooling wax, this was then polished (very carefully) and filled with mouldng silicon, which is nice cos nothing sticks to it (yet). then finally the silicon mould can be used to cast the final parts in resin. yet to see what Marc thinks, Not sure if the images worked ??? RE: Project MFD..............
Rich, look good to me mate, will hook up on Monday if your around - will TXT you.

OK here is the update and sorry for the lack of posts till now.
Made three bezels from the silicone mould and sprayed them satin black, the FR4 panels for the instruments were cut to size to suit the Cody screen images sizes. The openings were just slightly larger than the bezel inner dimensions so I could glue them to the fascia from behind. Added the screens, fixed with some 20 min epoxy. Routed the wires to keep them out of the way and applied the remaining transfers to complete the pods. The consoles were fitted for trial (see pics). Next is the HUD display, this will again be made from cnc cut FR4, and will have two pieces of clear acetate slid in at the correct angle and lit from below through a hole already in the cowl top by a green LED. marcs |
RE: Project MFD..............
Hey Marc!
Looks pretty wicked so far. did the company send you anything that gives you an idea on what animations you will program? or will you be simply displaying the static pics with no animations? As of now im still waiting delivery of my last ordered digital frames, but also building an f-16 cock in concert with the raptor cock. Ive noticed that the raptor screen dynamics arent very... well.... dynamic. I may end up simulating a simple flashing curser or a digital rolldown in a standby mode. At your much larger scale the effect should be a cheek slapper! |
RE: Project MFD..............
Not as yet, I will ask the question as to the frequency and animation sequence if there is one, they are a really helpful company and if I ever got a chance to build one of these for myself it would be the first project...

Added a simple green LED powered HUD panel, milled form some FR4 board and clear acetate for the screens.
I toyed with the idea of etching images to the acetate but the effect is really to give that 'green glow' that HUD's are famous for ;) |
RE: Project MFD..............
Ok
It took forever plus 3 days for the package to arrive, I bought 10 of the colbys. and was disappointed to find that though GIF formats are handled, the units flattens any animation factor by taking only the first frame of a gif animation and discarding the rest...... BUMMER! Looking at Tor's results, I had assumed that an animation was happening, I see now that it is a 5 second transition between stills instead. Here is what Im after...True animation. cursers flashing, numbers rolling, reticles sliding. In short, symbology dancing on the screen like MC hammer on ecstacy. What is needed is an engine that will play avi mpeg or mov files..... so! it appears that Im back to square one with my bag of used cell phones, or give the Oleds linked by Guillermo a try. I did notice that angling a glass off of the digiframe graphics did give a convincing and vivid(indoors) though static hud effect. Oh well. back to the lab. Bela |
