We had some bugs that were going to take too long to fix. Nothing that came up in any of our 4 month test window too...go figure. we'll work it out and try to make the relaunch smooth. we didn't lose any posts either btw..we had the old forum up for reference to optionally copy/paste over here until we could migrate the differential.

we had some very positive feedback from some users and some of course hate any change and was to be expected. the new forum boasts features we really need that this forum cannot do. this forum is older technology and once we fix up the issues I'm quite certain that the new forum will be to almost everyones satisfaction so much that if I threaten to bring this one back everyone will have my head :)

Why don't you guys run both at the same time and work the bugs out instead of swapping over from one to the other? It would probably help solve a lot of the problems you are having.
Do the same at the bottom of the old forum post a link to the new and leave a message that the change over will be permanent and complete when all the bugs are worked out of the new software.
This will give you time to correct the bugs and give forum users more time to adjust.

Apart from the fact that I didn't really care for the change (I'm not a big fan of fixing what doesn't seem to be broken), to me the biggest issue was that even after logigng in and being welcomed back as user 'Gordon Mc', I was still shown as user 'Guest' who could neither post nor send PMs etc. ... which meant I didn't even have any way of alerting you or any of the mod's about the problem. I looked for a general 'contact us' link anywhere on hte site, and could not find one.

I know you don't intend having another login screw-up, but just in case, maybe there should be some mechanism for notifying you guys about inability to FULLY log in ? (Or if there is already some such mechanism, make it more visible.

Regards,
Gordon

RE: Yo ! Strange RCU format

Gordon - I don't even need to get notified...I actually know :) Seriously I knew within 5 minutes of the major issues at hand. My phone rings off the hook. also we have a trouble ticket system you can reach from the main part of the site. the login snafu was from me having missed pushing one file live. just an error on my part.

Mace- if I could run both in parallel I would. However the db changes are major. Our DB is 30GB now and it took 3 full days to migrate it to the new format.

You guys really didn't get a chance to see what the new forum could do when all was working properly so hard to judge. it should actually be FASTER. allow wysiwyg posting. file uploads with progress bar, easier management of forums and subscriptions. you can opt for instant email on new posts to thread OR forum, you can do daily digest emails or weekly digest emails too for threads OR forums. Lots of ajax stuff so no page refreshes for many functions (faster then this forum again). Multi-quote of many posts by adding any post to your quote queuee then the quotes appear in your post in wysiwg. More pm features. Plus a lot more. All this with more speed too.

Obviously we have more work to do but I appreciate the good, bad and ugly feedback from the various members in all our forums. Obviously if we cannot get it faster and get it right we would keep what we have so no worries. Also the system you saw didn't have all the bells and whistles from the current forum I had planned on adding in the next week or two once the core code stabilized. I prefer not to add all the other stuff first so I can troubleshoot issues on the core codebase.

Yes it was a hot mess...4 months of testing didn't find half the stuff we need to address so think of yourselves and today as a fun 4 hour beta experiment :-) A little excitement never hurt anyone and you jet guys love excitement!

RE: Yo ! Strange RCU format

Marc,

I agree with you, we perhaps weren't able to try all the new added benefits of the new technology and indeed we would welcome these.
I think the major instant complaint of everyone, and this had very little to do with a spontaneous crave for not changing anything, was about the lay-out and general looks of the website.
It looked a lot less user friendly and having too much template-style graphics. Let's face it : it was hard to read smoothly and overlook all the running threads, it looked very static and did not invite anyone to post an opinion. I'm not just trying to be only sceptical, I admire any effort all of you have been doing to make this planet a tiny spot full of communication about a passion we share in the first place and would applaud any progress and step forward.
Making attractive websites is a talented gift (which I do not possess !) but even before I tried one move on the website I knew for sure that I liked the previous lay-out way more.
Why not introducing the new technology in a website which looks and functions similarly to what we love and have seen developing over the years instead of throwing all your efforts of all these years overboard and start again from scratch design and take another steep corrective curve again ?

Just my two cents.

Nicolas.

Man, now I'm relieved - I thought I had had a nightmare and dreamt that RCU had been taken over by aliens....:D:D
While new features may be both neccessary and welcome, I DO like the more colorful and inviting look that we have now!

Just a personal opinion! :)

New features are welcome.....has the search engine improved at all?
But the look for my taste (and poor eyes) was hideous. Not easy to read, big and bubbly.....very cartoon like.
Here I am after trying to view a thread[sm=bananahead.gif]
