Mike Andersons'Blue Angels_Miramar

Hey Guys,

Here's a 4 min movie of the Blue Angels from the 2008 MCAS Miramar Airshow . I'm wondering if there are any pilots that would try a take off like what is seen here one minute into this movie by solo Angel #5.

Looking forward to seeing you at Ca-Jets.

Mike Anderson

Hey Mike, great video, I see that type of take off done a lot at Jet Rallies, you should make one if you can. The only downside on the RC type of this take off, is that our runways are generally so short, no one is standing with that type of view to see it as well.

Solo #5's take off is a power maneuver and Sean's quite right about it being better at a larger facility so you can lift off just before center stage. I didn't have quite the power but was able to do something like it with my Yellow F-18 at a full scale airport. I'd taxi about 800 ft down, lift off, retract the flaps, keep the altitude at about 5 ft to pick up speed, slight pitch up, hit the gear switch, then roll (in the direction away from the flightline). When I got the timing right (which was rare enough), the plane would be inverted at center stage with the gear about 1/2 the way in, and would be fully retracted by the time it got upright.

Nice job Mike. That was a great day with some off the hook fly'n. That take off would be a cool think to practice for sure.

You notice He rolled with the flaps down[X(] I tried that with a super stick & almost lost it! Could it be done with a jet? I guess like you said it is a power manuver.

What would really be nice is to do the maneuver at the same scale speed but is probably not possible due to dynamic dissimilarity between the full scale and model aircraft.

Does anyone know of any Blue's pilots that are into RC jets? Maybe even who visit here from time to time?

No...unless he's super good about never mentioning it! The closest I've seen was a guy that was a crew chief for the Blues "back in the day".

Othr'nat, I'm sure Mr. Mike Anderson would enjoy hearing your comments on his movie, and would appreciate your honest opinions, as he's working hard on the polish.
So, let him hear it.

Yeah, the Blue Angel's rock!

Mike

nice work amigo. you need to dub in some RC footage of Tams Blue Angel Bird if you have any. smooth camera coverage overall

I believe he's the new slot pilot but #4 Maj Chris "Kitty" Collins used to fly some prop stuff from time to time out at the Miramar club when he was a student pilot and then thereafter when he became an Instructor at the might 101st. as a matter of fact, his first exposure to RC Jets was at Miramar, early 2000 ish time frame, where he got to watch a buddy of mine clip the charlie brown bush on the north side of our runway. pretty spectacular 6 Million Dollar man impression with a P120 powered BVM Bobcat. I think the quote 4-8 seconds after all the pieces came to a halt 400' down the runway was something like, "duuuuuudee that was F'n AWESOME" LOL we couldn't help but laugh hysterically. that bush is famous just ask any of the regulars out there.

Paul
next October if you get a chance for a photo op with the Blues be sure to tell #5 Maj Nathan "corky" Miller I said "roll 'em up" he'll probably break out of character and piss himself laughing about our time at the mighty 101st

cheers
buck

You got it Buck! Go Sharpshooters!

Was that Bill Brundles' Bobcat you were talkin' about? Cause when he hit a north edge bush, just opposite the pilot stations...it was absolute instant confetti. Just amazing.
Had the cam in my hand but wasn't shooting.
