question of AMA insurance coverage

On Friday I was in a substantial auto accident (I walked away without a scratch). I lost about $12,000.00 worth of RC related stuff (my airplane trailer rolled over). My homeowners is covering $6,200.00 of it, and I was wondering if anyone knows if AMA will cover an additional $1000.00 minus the $100.00? Also, if anyone has an airplane trailer they are looking to sell, I'm in the market again, something 6 x 10 or 12 would be great.

Bummer

Sorry to hear the unfortune Sean. I think they will, but I bet if you go to the AMA site, they probably have the "lengthy" policy or coverage stated there or a quick call to Kim Journell (Claims Secretary) would give you an answer.

Did you get the stuff I sent? Let me know if I can help anymore.

Again, sorry for the accident, but thank God you weren't hurt.

George

Was that you?

Was that you on I-65 North on Sunday? I passed a rolled over trailer in traffic and wondered if it was someone from TN jets. I didn't think so because I didn't see any planes.

If so, what happened?

Roll Over

FYI

Sean also rolled his travel trailer, a Ford Expedition plus the airplane trailer.

Sean, you are one lucky dude.

Glad to have him back in Austin.

I can hear Sean saying as he is upside down hanging by the seat belt, "Is this normal"

Mark, I'll get a hold of you later today, in the mean time, still looking for an answer. I read the AMA literature and it says "Fire, Theft". I guess I'll just call them today and find out. I'm only 30, so still learning some of the bigger lessons in life. Make sure on your homeowners off property insurance for personal stuff is enough to cover any of your planes on an away trip, or in a theft situation. And make sure that your auto policy has your trailer added to it in more than a liability situation. You have to ask, I didn't know that. It's only like $24.00 a year. I assumed improperly that it was covered. PS, BOB, it didn't roll all the way upside down, the whole rig was only going about 40 MPH, as many of you know, even going down hill, I couldn't get that train going over 60 with the wind at my back. Once the harmonics of the sway took hold, the whole rig just fell over on it's left side. Didn't even bust the driver side window, it really was more a teater totter deal, where it just kind of lopped over. Anyway, due to popular request I'll be posting some pics and a little video later today from my office.

I was on HWY 301 in Orangeburg SC, Friday morning around 10:30am. I was going to catch 26 to 20 west on my way to TN Jets. Anyone passing the accident site wouldn't have been able to see the planes as they were confeti in the trailer, and the airplane trailer was backwards in relation to traffic, with one door shut. Unlikely that anyone passing would have picked up on what was in the little trailer. Sean

The bottom line is the stuff...is just stuff that you can replace. Those parents can't replace that little girl.

Glad to hear the really important stuff came out unscathed.

Two Trailers

Mike,

He had a 20+ ft travel trailer and a 10-12 ft cargo trailer hooked on the back of the travel trailer... If I had to guess what happened, ruts in the highway caused by 18 wheelers and heavy iron going down the road.. I would bet he was in the right lane. Thats where the ruts are the worst... I got in those ruts in Mississippi a couple years ago.. scared the hell out of me. It's almost like a auto-pilot.. just let go of the wheel and you go right through.. I guess it's just another deal where the state paid too much for a cheap pavement job   :D

See ya soon!!!

Cheap Paving

Dan

After that remark about cheap paving, you better find another route for the Mississippi Afterburner and stay away from Rustin. Mike may have the Cajun Mafia make you a deal that you can't refuse.

Hey Mike, good to hear from you. Loved the thread on the F-15! Appreciate all the comments, even the "I told you so's" are apparently glad no injuries. I've been working every angle on how to get back to where I was. Found a brand new 7 x 14 Trailer decked out twin axle, air vent, brakes, etc for $2800 yesterday. Should have it within the next week or so ready to go. Found another Kangaroo, same time frame. Carlos will repair the simjet, but not till early July, so I'll miss Dallas. But ISOBAR and the rest will likely be at Superman. This time around I'm going to go the Motorhome Route (unless the insurance company doesn't total the trialer). Whether my train was dangerous or not, clearly the more connections you have the more parts that can go bad and cause a problem. I had over 4000 miles on that choo choo train, 3400 of them on this trip alone without ever a hint that something like this could happen. In my opinion, there has to be somehting about that particular stretch of road under some wierd condition such as wind. Only other cause I can think of is if something had shifted in the trailer itself. One possibility is I had just filled my 20 gallon container with JET A and it was stanidng in the back corner with a bungee on it. Don't see how, but maybe it rolled over? I'll never know why, but so far, it appears every thing I had is replaceable in short amounts of time, so I'll be catching up with a lot of you soon. Still don't have an answer to the original question which my guess is that no one has any experiance with this particular situation related to the Thousand in coverage. Oh well, I'll post results here when I find out. Later, sean

Dan, Unfortunately, the cheap pavement comment is probably correct. Until the state DOTD changes their design criteria this problem will not get better anytime soon. The rutting problem is caused by too much liquid asphalt in the mix design. All the contractors realize this is the problem but the state hands have a hard time listening. Sorta like the AMA. For the time being everybody please be careful. Especially during a rain storm when the ruts fill up with water. Later, Mike Haddox

Rear Loaded

Hi Sean,

I think you may have hit on your problem. That full 20 gal. container of Jet A sitting in the rear of a small cargo trailer could make the trailer fish tail and get out of control quickly. I pull my 8x16 trailer with a Yukon XL, and if I load it with a weight bias to the rear of the trailer, it weaves, and the faster you go, the worse it gets. Also, I don't think you have enough tow vehicle. From what you were telling me at Mississippi, your Expedition is grossly over loaded. You said, " I couldn't get that train going over 60 with the wind at my back." Here is the criteria for your next tow vehicle: If it won't cruise with the full load (wagon train) at 85, you are under powered!! :D

I think you were lucky for 4000 miles. Glad you are okay.

Dennis

I'll second that.

My trailer was causing me some problems in terms of pushing the tail end of my Astro van too low to the ground, so I figured that this mean there was too much tongue weight and I needed to move the CG of the trailer aft. I did that, and last weekend Itowed it for the first time since the mod. It weaved and swayed like never before. Fortunately I was able to kill the sway by hitting only the trailer brakes, not the van brakes. (Always put the electrical brake controller where you can easily hit that switch !)

It's gonna take some experimenting to get the right balance.

I also agree about the slow lane always being in the worst condition. Ugh.

Gordon

Hey Dennis, thanks for the comments, but this time around, I found a Pusher Diesel 30' near here. I've got the bug to have a motor home anyway. Just a hell of a lot more room and as cluttered as I am, I need it. I've already found a ready to fly, unflown ROO and another plane trailer. I'll have a siginificanlty better rig put together here in the next month or two. The only possible problem would be if they decide to repair the travel trailer instead of buy me out. If that happens, I'll just go with the hotel room route for meets outside of TX until I can unload it without getting hosed.
