Oil type

Hello gents.

I had read somewhere that says some pilots are using good quality 2 stroke oil used for dirt bike and weed whackers for their turbines. Is this a good idea or
would it damage the bearings? Thanks.

I've heard this as well. But I just looked at a bottle (1L) of Motul, a high quality 2s oil. Retail $15.95. I'm sure prices may vary. Amsoil would be much higher. If you buy turbine oil by the case(24), you can get it for less than $10/qt incl shipping.

Lots of discussion about oil including 2 stroke oil. - John.

RE: Oil type

Mobil DTE light, Castrol TTS and TCW3 are all being used by Wren customers. We don't recommend TCW3 for the 44 because it is slightly "sticky" as it's designed to coat the parts of marine engines against salt corrosion, and the tiny holes inside the 44 might be affected. Otherwise the choice is yours.

Lots of Wren users including me are happy with TW3 oil in the UK anyway!

Price is not the question here. Health is. Turbine oil contain organo-phosphates, a super nasty chemical used in nerve gas. Do a search on Organo-Phosphates and see just how nasty the stuff is and the results of exposure to it.

to TURBINES, turbine oil, to 2 stroke engines, 2 stroke oil!!!!!!

my opinion.

RE: Oil type

Just a quick note.

Turbine oil in use with full size turbines does not get burnt it is used as a lubricant.

2 stroke oil is designed to be mixed & burnt lubricating as it goes through.

I use TCW3 outboard motor oil in my Wren, loads of flights 300 plus & still on my first set of bearings from when I bought the kit and made it at least 4 years ago.

Using turbine oil in my Simjet's only because it was the recommended oil for warranty, but once my stock is depleated all my turbines will run on TCW3.

It is cheaper and mixes better and is not harmfull. Also easy to get hold of.:D
You can tell which stock of Kero is mixed because it is much darker than turbine oil mix.

Just my observations,

Regards,
John

RE: Oil type

My flying buddies and I are using TCW3 and have been for ages. No issues with our engines or our health. Those who say turbine oil should be used simply because it is a turbine are misguided and have no knowledge of the applications of each of these oil types or the workings of the engines. I am no expert but I know enough about this stuff and human biology to know that use of turbine oil is unnecessary, unwise and unhealthy.

Craig.

RE: Oil type

Wow, a lot of mix opinion and tips. I have read a little about the compound found in turbine oil. It appears that it is not designed to be burn
due to the fact that the fumes can be very hazardous to your health. I guess i just have to go with the 2 stroke oil then. If it eats up the bearings
in a shorter time than turbine oil, then so be it. Thank you for your inputs gents.

RE: Oil type

Try to chase up some Mobil DTE light industrial turbine oil.

From what I could find out it had no organo-phosphates.

I'm using it at the moment & it's recommended by Wren.

In Australia it's also 1/5 the price of turbine or top quality 2 stroke oil but with the small percentage used in turbine fuel the cost was not an issue with me.

One bad point, being an industrial product I had to buy it in a large (20 litres) quantity. - John.

jetJohn,
Where in the UK do you get TCW3 or other recommended 2-stroke oils?
And how much do they cost?

RE: Oil type

I've been using the TCW-3 2 stroke engine oil. I've got about 40 flights with it now w/ no issues. BUT the first start of the day the turbine doesn't spin up as quickly and as freely as the last start. And if the day is fairly cold (less than 45-50* F) its damn near impossible to get a start b/c the oil get sticky and thick in the colder weather and the onboard starter has a hard time turbine the turbine over.

Dude, go with Mobile DTE Light! I use it in my Jetcat. Not harmful!:D

Concerning the harmful chemicals, I have been thinking of getting away from using my Aeroshell. Not clear on what TCW3 is?? Is there an agreed alternative at this point, or is it all individual preference? Is there a place any of you are buying from?

Mobile DTE Light? What is your mix ratio? Where are you finding it?

Thanks.

Hi Alasdair,

I use Quick silver premium outboard motor oil.TCW3. It is designed for High performance 2 stroke marine outboards.
It has an anti ash formula and is non toxic when burnt.
Last price was £17.25 for a 4 litre container from local marine/chandlers.
Also available in 1 litre bottles.

You should also be able to get a good quality one from a motorcycle shop.
Make sure you buy one that specifically states TCW3 or equivalent.
NOT the cheap 2 stroke mix you can use for strimmers they tend to make everthing a bit sticky.

Photo's attached of containers and label.
Also because it is very dark you can clearly see what Kero or Jet a has been mixed ready for use.
p.s. Just remember our turbines are basically very high reving 2 stroke motors just without the pistons.

Hope this helps,

Regards,
John

Hi John
I have been using 2 stroke oil in all of my Simjets 2300 AES-3000AES and Nexus I was recomended it by Lars the owner of Simjet he recomended STADOIL Acua marin wich also has the TCW3 spec and I have had no issues with any of my turbines including my super-sport from WREN, so you can use it in your Simjets

John did you not get my PM the other night?

regards

Andreas

Andy I swear I told you we (jim and I) were running DTE lite.. It's not available in anything smaller than a 5 gallon container though, so you have to mix it. I'm running it 20 to 1 just like the aeroshell. $80 local for 5 gallons, works outs to $4 per quart. it only takes a second to pour and and measure the 1 quart of DTE lite to mix with the 5 gallons of fuel.... anyway so far so good.

That's the problem I had with Castrol TTS 2 stroke oil.
A month or so after the last flying session the starter would struggle to spin my engine (supersport) over.

The DTE light doesn't have that problem. - John.

Mugenkidd,
You can buy Mobil DTE light (ISO 32, SAE 10) in 1 gallon containers. MCMASTER-CARR has it for $23.28/gallon ($5.82/quart) search part number 2158K14

Easy Mugen. I had a shelf full of Aeroshell at the time and wasn't excited about mixing from 5 gallons of oil. My 'selective listening' probably kept me from remembering anyway. At least this is what my wife says.

RE: Oil type

JetJohn,
Thank you. I see! So TCW3 is a spec for oil, not a brand. And it is sold as outboard oil. Plenty of them around here.

I am concerned by the reported stickiness (mentioned by Sara and others) as I fly in winter when its gets cold. Come to think of it, it is cold most of the year.

Does anyone know of a source in the UK of the Mobil DTE lite ???
