12FG Programming help needed please
 
I'm attempting to help a friend set up 3-position flaps (ie flaps up, half-flap and full-flap) with his new 12FG 2.4GHz. I use a 10X, so am not familiar with Futaba programming - yet. I have downloaded the 12FG manual and am getting on with it OK, but need a spot of guidance.

First what does AFR stand for? I realise it deals with expo and rates, but what 3 words do A F R replace?.

Second, and similarly, what is VR and what do the letters V & R stand for?

Regarding the flap programming, unlike the 10X there doesn't appear to be a pre-programmed flap function analagous to code 66 on the 10X and its associated 3-position flap/landing switch, and my friend thinks he'll need to use 2 switches and mixing to achieve the 3 position flaps, plus further mixing for corrective elevator trim.

However, it seems to me that with the 12FG, you can assign, say, 3-position switch SB to control the flaps, and program the switch using flight conditions to achieve the 3 flap positions and the associated ele trim. Is this the case, or am I missing something?

The 12FG does look like it'll be a very capable outfit once we've come to terms with it.

I'm a JR user myself but i do setup allot of Futaba equipment and IIRC the flaps come assigned to the left slider and you just go into the AUX Channel and assign that channel to whatever switch you want the flaps on, they'll then be 0/50/100 with the 3 position switch. you can't adjust the 50 so set it mechanically to what you want then use end points to set full up and down flap.

and you may not belive this but AFR means 'primary rate'

Not quite. It stands for 'Adjustable Function Rate' according to the 9Z manual. If you use it make sure you read the manual as it is not quite the same as ATV although it may appear that it is.

i don't have a 9z or its manual but even Futaba calls it primary rate, ATV/End Point are the maximum deflection that channel can go regardless if it's just a control input or an input plus a mix, the AFR is the same 'primary rate' that the master channel will move that channel and that rate will remain constant (even with an added mix or offset) unless it tries to exceed an end point setting at which point the end point overrides it and will not allow a higher deflection.

Please explain dual rates, exponential, AFR and ATV and how they are related.
1. What is AFR? How is it different from ATV?

ATV is each individual servo's end point adjustment. ATV is specific to each individual servo, so adjusting the ATV to the aileron channel will not, for example, adjust the servo throw of the second aileron servo if you have flaperons set up. ATV is the 'master' control. That is to say, it takes priority over all other items. Therefore, adjusting ATV will affect anything else that is a percentage from that number, including rates, exponentials, and mixes.

AFR is essentially "primary rate" (or high rate) to go with the 'dual rate' (or low rate) function of the radio. This is what the 8U and 6X consider the first switch position in dual rate which most modelers use as their high rate. AFR is active until the dual rate is activated, and it belongs to each CONTROL or AXIS of the airplane. Therefore, adjusting AFR for ailerons in a model with flaperons will affect the throw of both servos.

Why set AFR instead of adjusting ATV? Easy. ATV is your end point for EVERYTHING the radio does....mixes, expos, everything. So if you have a low rate, mixes, etc, that you like, but you need a little more (or less) on high rate, adjusting ATV will mess up all that other work. AFR is your 'high rate' so adjust it to your liking.

2. How do I set Expos? Exponential is set independently for your 'high rate' (called AFR) and 'low rate' (called dual rate). So you have to go into AFR, set your high rate how you want it, then go to the NEXT screen to set exponential. This is your expo setting for when your dual (low) rate is not activated for that channel.

Now if you also want expo on your low rate, then go to dual rates, set up your low rate and its switch, and then set an expo here as well.

Not quite true, you can adjust the 50% point (mid-point) with sub trim for that channel. Also, as you said, you can setup the same switch as a "flight condition" switch and set different flight conditions (almost unlimited number in the 12FG) for flaps "up", "mid", and"down"...

Did that with my Flash and different elevator trims, control rates, and expo for each condition as specified in the Flash instructions...

I used the 'Flap Setting" menu.
I switch condition using the flap 3 position switch. I chosed to have a separate 'flap setting' setup for each flight condition. This allowed me to use the 'offset' field in the 'flap setting' menu to precisely set the postion of each flap. This was with a model with 1 channel for each flap.
