6V battery and no regulator??

Can I just install a 6V battery with no regulator? It is going into a Shokjet. The motor is the SuperBee which came with a Lipo for it. I am trying to keep it simple. What battery and how many miliamps would be safe? Thanks guys

If you are talking about a 5 cell NiCd or NiMh then yes you will be fine. In fact, JC rec. that you run a 5 cell (6 volt) pack.

I myself run two a123 cells for my rx and servos and have yet to have any issues. I think you will find there are several guys both jets and large scale airplanes that run the A123 cells.

You will need a special charger for them as they are LiFe cells.

If you are just going to run a 5 cell pack you will be fine. Just make sure the pack is up to the "job" at hand. (good shape)

hope this helps.

as for milliamps, I would go with something at least in the 2000mah range if not larger. That is just my opinion.

My A123 cells are 2300 or 2600 I forget.

I use A123 2300mah batteries in both of my Super Bees. The original battery is a lithium Ion not a lithium polymer. No regulators needed. I use two A123's for receiver and servos and one for the ECU. They have worked flawlessly. Jet Central approves the use of the A123's for the ECU.

lear31A Are you talking about for the rx or the turbine ECU?

C185PILOT, when you went to A123 for the turbine, did you notice a diff. in spool up speed (or lack of?) Just wondering.

thanks

I am talking about the receiver battery only, I will use the supplied Li-Ion battery for the ECU> Thanks

Lear31,

The short simple answer to using 6V without a regulator is yes. I have been running 6V batteries for over 10 years with no issues. The only real issue you have to watch is when using certain Futaba servos. Some of their servos are not rated for 6V. As far as your Shock goes, I am using a 6V JR Extra 1800 Nicd in mine and have around 45 flights. The only drawback is that I have to charge about every 3-4 flights.

I also have been using unregulated 5 cell Nicad Rx packs in all my planes for the past 10 years. In my jets I use 1700 mah packs and recharge after 3 flights. That's not a problem for me since I always take 2 or 3 planes to the field and rarely put more than 3 flights per day on any one.

Noah...no difference whatsoever in turbine performance...spool up etc. I get five or six flights and use about 50% capacity on the 2300 mah batteries and recharge in about 15 minutes. Plus I can recharge in the airplane give the inherent safety of the A123 chemistry.

got to love the A123 cells!

Yes, some servos are not rated at 6volts, so be sure that the ones you are using don't say 4.8v only. Futaba is pretty good about listing them, not sure if there is any JR servos out there not rated 6v, and hitec I would think anything made in the last few years you are good to go.

hope this helps.
