i agree my friend...i prefer to have all three systems seperate...doors/gears/brakes..build to last
...becouse after time door cilynders if are not perfectly aling they start loos air too..
yes there is a need for more than two airtanks...after all they are not heavy..
...also i think ill re shape the main big tank too...and i have a space in between the two to use for a smoke tank...

Today I was over visiting a friend who is building the SM Viper. I noticed when he mounted his servos he did not use the rubber grommets on the servo mounts.

I have always used the grommets in the past. How do you mount your servos, with or without grommets?

In the tight spaces it does give you a hair more room.

I am just curious.

in some applicatons, I use 2-56 with washers and lock nuts and I do not use the rubber or the grommets.....

Hey Stan

the servos you saw i think they where in ailerons.
there where the aluminum L mounts hold the servo..
becouse Skymaster hardwear provide too short M3 screws the only way to do work if you bord to go out and get long ones
is to install the servo direct with out the rubber.

jets dont have promblem with vibrations so servos life will be the same with out them and they will do fine!

i personaly always use the the rubber and longer screws with safety nuts on the back cose threating in aluminium can be soft..

this way when i finish i never go back to them

I have always used the rubber grommets in the past. If you don't when you remove a servo and then put it back it will not line up like the last time.

The aluminum brackets they sent me were stripped out on a few of the holes. Jeff is sending me a few more. I did not use the grommets there.

I have built a lot of kits over the years, but never one like this where there are no instructions. Friends tell me this is the way it is with the Chinese jet kits. What I have found so far is to just do it your way or you will spend many hours trying to figure out how they did it. Just about have all my control surfaces finished, Starting to make some headway

Here is a question for you l-39 builders who have installed your flap horns..

When I mounted my flap servo on the cut out rib just inside the wing root, there was a nice cut out for the servo. I then cut a slot on the bottom of the wing for the servo arm.

As I am about to glue the horn in the flap I measured a direct line from the servo arm to where the flap horn would sit, only to find that the angle that is produced by screwing the servo to the servo rib produces an almost 10 degree intercept point with the hinge line.. So the rib was not glued in perpendicular to the hinge line. Hope I am making myself clear on this one.

Has anyone else noticed this problem? I guess I could build an angle into the way the servo mounts, or I could just live with the angle and hope there is very little binding as a result of not being perpendicular to the hinge line.

Has anyone noticed this in your build? and what did you do to fix the problem?

cut the corners out from the big tank to clear the fuse if you like..
this will give litle more room for smoke tank in the midle of fuel tanks.
few layers of kevlar and fiberglass will make the new walls..

I did notice that issue. It would certainly be best practice to pack one side of the servo to line it up with the hinge line of the flap. I just left it as it was, the binding will be minimal so I'm not concerned myself.

I tend to agree with your assessment. The amount of binding should be very little. Not worth changing the angle of the servo especially after the slot for the servo arm is in.

tank didnt fit in the first place Stan so it was one way for me[&o]
it was only a 20 min of work anyway..

..here is my flap link but not yet programed...binbing is very litle..not a promblem i think

Hi George,

20 minutes is not bad. I have not started to work on my tank install yet. I might end up doing what you did.

Hard to tell from your pictures if your flap arm ended up not being perpendicular to the hinge line. After Alex commented that his was off also I would bet that they are all off. This is based on the fact that the flap servo mount is off. In my case I did not discover it until I attached the flap horn to the servo arm before I glued the flap horn into the flap.

I have a copy of SM's manual. I printed it off the computer when I started the build. It is not very helpful.

I guess I am having the same issues with the fuel cells, It appears that the air inlets are in the way of the tanks sitting proper. but I am not going to cut and patch the bottom tank, but i think I will turn the top tank 180 degrees.

Details 4 Scale lighting install help, does anyone have any pics on how to install the tip tank lights? I have the landing lights mounted, but I have no clue as to install strobes and Navigation lights.....

ok, progress is coming along quick, but I did something today which is gonna cost me money.

I have a vinyl cutter of my own and I was cutting decals for the L-39. well I decided to add the Capt's name under the cockpit window. problem is I have two male pilots already, and I stepped back and looked at the name on the jet, Now I have to look for a female pilot. since my daughter does all my web work and helps with the graphics. I thought I would add her name.


Capt. Cystal "web" Slater. nicknamed her "Web" as she does web design work......

where can I get a female pilot that will fit the L-39?????

Hi Guys

It's all finished..................just waiting for some good weather and a bit of time to take it flying, Ali's offered to do the maiden.............it's been over a year since I've flown anything bigger than a parkzone model so I'm pleased Ali's going to fly it [sm=regular_smile.gif] Must cut down on the building!

I'm going to make some ordnance for it when I get time, think it will really enhance this model especially with those long drop tanks on it, I've only seen models with the shorter ones....

anyway here's some pictures.

Forgot to mention the canopy frame hasn't had a clear-coat that's why there's a slight colour variation. Will do it when I spray the next model in a few weeks...

Congratulations Alex,

Wonderful job.

Anyone who can finish this model especially your quality of work deserves a medal.

I am about 1/2 way through this one and I can attest to it.

Apologies for not replying earlier than this, I’ve been out of the frame for a bit. Do you want to know anything specific?
Generally I would say that I’m impressed with the kit and the service I have received from FEJ. On the down side FEJ’s could have invested in better quality landing gear. I had to completely re-build mine because the dampening springs had broken parts and generally didn’t work. I've also found that a couple of parts are missing, the canopy hinge pivot for the air piston and two pushrods for the elevators.
I guess you have yours by now, what colour scheme did you choose?
