Any tips for a new builder?
 

I plan on purchasing a F/A-18 Hornet soon. Only problem I have encountered is the lack of sellers. I have found one though that is near by. If any of ya can take a look and see whether or not it would be a good thing to buy. The site is F-18

Also I have a question about actually painting the jet. How do you guys do it? Do you do it yourself or have someone else do it?

I think I would spend a little more cash and get a Yellow Aircraft F-18 and have a true jet rather than one with a prop hanging off one end of it. At least, that is what I would do. And a 90 mph top speed (as quoted from the website) isn't fast at all, in fact I would consider it boringly slow. A Sig 4-Star forty with a Supertigre GS .40 will top 90 mph!

As far as the painting question, the answer is yes and yes. I have done both. I would like to always pay the same guy to do the painting but he got burned out on painting planes and won't do it any more. So, since he quit, I have to do my own paintjob since most anyone else is too expensive for me. See my gallery for planes I have painted.

FWIW,
I had the G&P sales F-18 and it was fun to fly and fast to build..if your not quite ready for the cost of ducted fan or turbine jets, this would be a great plane to experience jet flight with. Don't worry about the looks of the prop in the back, you can't see it! Kinda like the CBM F-16..

Yeah, I was kinda wondering about the prop. I would rather have a true jet, F/A-18 of course, than one with a prop. How much harder is it to build a ducted fan or turbine jet than one like G&P's?

Also, in your own opinion, which is the best kit/company to go with? Keep in mind I'm looking for a realistic looking F/A-18. So I imagine I'd be going with a turbine instead of an inducted fan.

I for one think the Yellow Aircraft F-18 single would make a better choice for a guy just starting out. It is much smaller than the "twin" F-18 and would be far less intimidating for the first time jet pilot. The smaller one could be built either as ducted fan or set up for one of the 12LB thrust class turbines. Yellow Aircraft puts out a high quality kit that is pretty easy to build.
