Batman Batwing

The other day my wife and I went to Planet Hollywood in NYC. She hated it and I loved it !!! there must have been over 15 RC jets just hanging up throughout the place (why she hated it , and why I loved it :) ) , all of them props that had been used for movies. Theres an F-16 there which I swear is a BVM, just like one I have ...
anyway, what realy caught my attention was a large model of the Batwing from one of the older batman movies. The thing looked so cool !! one bad @$$ jet !! Looking at it, I just know one of thesw can be made to fly with turbine power, ( and a couple of gyros here and there :D ) Has anyone ever made one of these ? Im realy curious, as I might concider it for my next project after I finish a turbine powered bell 230 (vario / graupner) The picture I included is not the model from Planet Hollywood, but a Monogram model I found on the WEB .... Would certainly be different! :D

great project
I dont think that ugly thing is going to fly without at least three on board computers supplementing your servo's.
I once ran over my friends son's batwing in his driveway. Toys R us sells them for $12.99. You can scan the instruction booklet 3 view pictures and inlarge them. Great starting point. Also Batman is on the 'WB' in the afternoons. You can watch that thing fly and learn it's flight envelope. It seems to fly very well. Good luck my friend. |
Batman Batwing
lol,
I already went on amazon.com and ordered the movie :) , and I ordered the Monogram plastic kit. I don't think any computers will be necessary, with today's heading hold gyris, you can flyanything with a surface for lift and a few controll surfaces ... A guy I know made his engine test stand fly ... it was rather large piece of plywood, with a os 1.40 strapped to the front, and a whole bunch of servos and gyros ... It flew !! not bad either :) , just could not land :D .... I have about 6 months before im finished with my bell 230, and im seriously giving thought to this Batwing thing ... I am already thinking of a nice p80 jet cat, piping , controll surfaces , etc ... I do have to say, i wish there was a way to make the Startrek enterprise flight worthy, but most of its lift area is located in the most useless place, the front ... Wojtek |

Ive seen prop models of that that could fly, why not turbine?

bat
Hi
After loooking over the picture I don't see a reason why it can't be made to fly. I may be crazy enough to build one for my 7 year old. Keep me posted on your progress. I have an X Wing fighter from Star Wars that I'm looking over right now. |
X-Wing Fighter
Some company used to sell an X-wing fighter kit back in the 80's. All I can remember about it is that it looked pretty much like the one in the movies, and that it was pretty expensive for a prop model at that time.
Not too sure how well it flew, but the company is not in business anymore. Maybe that's an indication of how well it flew? |
X-wing fighter
I used to have the Estes model rocket of the X-wing. It was a long time ago but I remember the fuse/body was plastic and about 15 inches long I believe. This kit would be a terrific starting point for measurements for enlarging if you wanted to make a plug for a larger model. The rocket used a single "D" size rocket motor if I rememeber correctly, was awesome looking and looked very scale-considering it was a model of a movie space ship!:D
I never flew mine after I built it because I was afraid of crashing it and it looked so coooool! It used to just sit on it's stand in my room. Funny, but I don't remember what ever happened to it! Just a thought!:D Myles |

I have a prop version of the Bat plane and it doesn't need any computer or gyros. It flies great on a simple 4 channel radio.

he he he he
So much for your 3 computers hey navcom, lol. Good thing you weren't around when the Wright brothers took the first flight. I can hear you now. " man your going to need 3 on board pilots just to controll it"

Bat plane
Nice prop job, Where can I get a set of plans?
Thanks |
Batman Batwing
Here is a thread with all of the information I have on the Bat Plane. I think the company went out of business though.

Batman Plane
Is anyone building a turbine version of the Bat plane?
|
Batman Batwing
I have started with some design work. I have a semi complete set of plans ... I took a plastic model kit and sliced it into cross sections. I took these , scanned them on my PC, and enlarged them. Im going to use the cross sections as guides for a plug to make a fiberglass fuselage, and wing .... It's probably a year till I get anywhere with this as I do have a lot of other projects going on ..

There's a fellow named Georges, a Frenchman, a Rolls-Royce mechanic, who flies one of the prop ones at BCMA in Teaneck all the time. You ought to get his input, his models all fly well, and he's right in your area...

wiwanczyk-
godspeed and goodluck with the scale batwing! Searches so far on a batwing are slim to none. I'm contemplating the design of a ducted-fan batwing. My design premise is a basic batwing shape (it's a cartoon so who cares the millimeters). The powerplant is ducted fan for profile and cost savings (vs prop or turbine). For prototype- fixed tricycle or perhaps taildragger gear. Airframe of built-up ply laminated with glass. Rudder functionality is via internal G-10 fiberglass thrust-vectoring (jet-ski setup). Though i do dig the v-tail design too... At any rate, for now this is "holy pie in the sky Batman!"... Keep at it guys! You never know when you may be the next vendor of the most popular RC kit in America! |
Bat Plane
Go for it guys and keep us posted on the progress of this plane!

X-wing
I don't remember which RCM or Model Airplane News, one of them have a plan for the X-Wing fighter. {biplane canard xwing]

Batman Batwing
Was in the hobby shoop last night and came across a different batplane. Kit by polar lights and it was a more normal looking jet(side intakes and single exhaust) but had scalloped wings, and tail. Definately a flyer.

I was going to make a prop version too someday :-)
