Some small detail, which had me think...was the two spruce stringers separating the hatch. My spruce stringers were way too stiff and I was afraid that they would lead to warpage of the hatch..so I solved it by splitting it in two and gluing it together with 20 min epoxy while clamping it in place. I had to do this operation 4 times .... and ended it up with ''pre-bent'' stringers.

Hope you get well soon :)

Here is a question from a novice builder; why is there called for spruce stringers. The fuse is to be planked with 3mm balsa and then glass & epoxy, so would it not be strong enough with balsa stringers ?

Gandalv

Hi Gandalv,

The strength of the balsastringer- I´m sure - suffice...however this area of the hatch is very exposed to wear and tear, and balsa being a relative soft material compared to spruce....spruce should be prefered.

I opened the hatch cutting the formers from outside with the blade from a hacksaw. Leaving the last planking around the seperating line of the hatch free, I got access to the inside....

The gap between former 1 and 2 has been partly closed with blocks of 1/2" balsa...

And my balsa sheets has arrived today from Germany :D

The wing roots have now got 1/8" balsa sheet on top. Cutting one piece at a time and adjusting it to the fuselage...gluing all the pieces together with cyano and then finally onto the wing root ...using white glue and clamps.
Time to turn the fuselage over..using two posts from the jig and a couple of clamps to keep it in place.

Using two layers of 5mm plywood glued together to produce the bearers for the nosegear. Here just a trial fit.
My friend Ivve Hallberg, who also built the Vampire supplied me with a link to a manufaturer in India who supplies retracts among others. http://umstech.in/products_allmain.p...ameget=Landing
I ordered a complete set of hydraulic retracts with wheels and brakes after having seen Ivve´s gear in action. Very favourable priced.

Hi Peter
The retracts looks like the Eurokit Deluxe.I have one set in my garage and it looks the same.
You could use air or hydralic it´s up to the user.

Hi Niclas,

Yes they are very similar...I guess it´s some kind of clone??? But the price is only one third or less of what Eurokit charges.....

The landing gear plus accessories... As Niclas previously stated..it looks exactly like Eurokits.
The customized wheel hubs are the work of Ivve Hallberg [:-]

Dear Per Strommen,
I am just starting the Belair kit and am somewhat concerned to see that there is no washout on this highly-tapered wing .

The aircraft appears to fly very nicely judging Kerry Sterner's flight on Youtube - would you mind me enquiring how yours flies?

Cheers,
Keith

Hello Keith,

Whether Per reads this thread very often I don´t know...but I might be able to answer your question.
My friend Ivve Hallberg built the 1/5 scale Vampire and crashed it during a landing approach due to too low speed when turning onto the final, according to the vitnesses.... so you have too keep up speed till final!

I thought he would be OK with flaps down as flaps effectively give you a bit of washout. Was he landing flapless?

"Vampire" (Kerry) Did you design using the full size sections? According to Lednicer:- root EC1240/0640 (14%), tip
EC1240/0640 (9%)
If so where did you get them? I have never heard of them. If not, what did you use instead?

Do other models from the plan drop a wing when stalled clean?

Thankyou, Pete, for your response. It will be interesting to hear from others how this model behaves close to the stall. My own disposition is to include a degree or two of washout and I'm glad that my good friend and aerodynamics expert, Alasdair Sutherland - who I consult in relation to all my scratch-built large model designs - has followed up our personal discussion by entering this debate.

I hope the designer, Kerry Sterner, might add his insights, too -.

Cheers,
K.

I have been in contact with Ivve Hallberg today. He has another explanation to what happened. He believes that he might have experienced a failsafe/lock-out situation on the radio, because there was no reponse from the turbine when he opened the throttle...and no other response, whatsoever....
He furthermore added that he used the flaps on approach....when trying to stall the model when testing it´s performance he said that it was hardly noticable when stalled and that it never had a tendency of tipstalling. He furthermore built in some degrees of washout....
It is a very docile and comfortable model to fly...Ivve informs.....

Hi Pete,
I follow with attention your work, is very rewarding as working with wood in the model and learn a lot.
Congratulations, this is good work

The Vampire will fly fine without the washout, but will drop a wing when stalled, at least mine does. But the low wing loading will allow really slow flight before reaching the critical angle of attack. If you are really concerned about tip stall, you can follow the advice given here, "crow" mixing works fine in takeoff and landing configurations, and raising both ailerons in normal flight mode will also help. But if you have not built your wing yet, why not just add the 2 degree washout. This may give you some peace of mind, but is not absolutely necessary in my opinon.
I have been lucky to be allowed to fly the full-size T11 lately, and the wing drops there too. Quite violently in an accellerated stall as I found out.

Hello Per

Was that the silvergray T11 that did that really thight and low 180 degree turn on the north side of Kjevik airport in August/September ? That on almost came right over my rooftop when it lined up for what must have been a low pass over Kjevik :D :D please do that again [8D]

The vampire is really an amazing plane with a fantastic sound from that turbine.

Thanks, Per - that's very helpful. Your experience in the fullsize is also interesting to here - what a privilege; I'm envious. Were you the pilot or passenger ?

Keith
PS I'm modifying the basic kit to the T11 version of the 'Vampire Preservation Flight' WZ507. I remember these aircraft as a boy flying from the local RAF Acklington Airfield in Northumberland during the 1950's -.

Nice progress for a sick man! Hope your heart condition will allow you to continue producing excellent models. I expect the Vampire to fly at Laxå in the spring?

Gandalv
Yes, that was my plane you saw, but piloted by my friend Kenneth Aarkvisla.

Keith
I have finished my checkout program and have licence to fly the Vampire Mk 100 and Mk 115. Stall series is included in the checkout for most aircraft.

Per...

Just got a short note from the hospital today, informing me that my heart still has it´s previous pumping ability... so I guess that I can´t claim being a sick man anymore..? :D
With a bit of luck I might be able to show at least someting similar to a Vampire in Laxå in May.....;)

I have begun to install the split flaps starting with the innermost flaps. Using the flaps from Ivve Hallbergs Vampire, I thought I might save some time? The job is quite demanding in order to secure a good fit of the flaps. I gave the skin a layer of 100 grams glass cloth and epoxy to strengthen the part of the wing skin where the flap servo was installed. But judge yourself from the series of photos I shot....

RE: Sterner - DH 100 VAMPIRE buildingThread

Hi to all who have had questions about the slow speed flight tendencies of the Vampire design.

In all honesty I have years of flying experiance with both the 1/5th scale I flew at Top Gun in 98 and 99 and then onto the 1/4 scale the past several years. It will take a "deep" stall to create the condition (assuming a properly laterally balanced wing) in which the wing tip will roll off. Depending on the design and wing loading, washout will only marginally delay this effect.

If the airframe is configured and flown as described in the flight set-up portion of the manual, it will insure full success with little worry.

The GA-23012 airfoil I have used is very close to scale and has very good low speed characteristics and years of flying the Vampire and my other designs has born this out.

While as good a flying airframe the Vampire is as designed, if it makes one more comfortable to incorporate Washout or CROW, by all means this will only serve to enhance its already very good low speed performance.

Best Regards to all.
