NEW Afterburner LED rings - will this interest jet pilots ?

Hello guys,

here is my latest development - my first prototype after burner LED ring kit.

I wanted something more solid than the current rings on the market which are very delicate - so this ring is made out of Orange high density LEDs inside a rubber/silicon clear case, which is flexible and can be reshaped in many ways. this also protects the LEDs from possible damage. the clear case has been tested for heat resistance and was found very effective even againt a bare flame.

Here is a short video demonstrating the prototype:

The whole system is very light weight - exact weight figures will follow shortly once i weigh all components carefully.

Best part is that most plug and play systems on the market are priced at 200$ and above. I believe i can offer these complete systems plug and play with controller/driver included (minus small 4S battery) for about 100$, and with battery for about 120$ total.

Im curious if you guys think there is a good market for these. if i get enough interest, i may very well go into production with these.

Thanks for your advice.

I think they are very cool.. They should be perfect for EDF jets!

For sure the price is half that of the units available, and should work well in EDF Jets

I built one as well using my afterburner circuit. I started selling them with discrete LEDs for EDFs but then moved to this type of strip.

I have a ton of that silicon encased LED strip that you can buy from Hong Kong. It's pretty good stuff and cheap to boot. It's not as bright as my other LEDs but it may do the job...

I like that too, flexibility is nice as well. And the price is much more attractive, I like the LED afterburner idea, but not enough to spend the current prices out there :)

I love it, let me know when they are ready! Well done. The price is very attractive.

Hello,

look my homemade kit ;o)
http://www.jtso.fr/la-post-combustio...votre-jet.html

use google translator

At the beginning, I tried with the Led rubbers from HK with 24 LED , as you ... but the light isn't powerfull and too small diameter (24 or 48 or 72 ..) . ok for EDF jet, but not enough for turbine.
You need high luminecens LED on the ring.Best regards,

Sébastien

Thanks everyone for the replies. it certainly seems like i need to start producing these.

Sebastien, to me it seems that the LED strip i have is quite visible and would work well on turbines also. i estimate a turbine model would need 2 rings to really shine well though.

I will do a flight test soon + video, and report back.

For the others - Yes this would work great on an EDF jet as well.

The planes with AB rings I have seen in "real life", all used the "super bright" LED's, the ones that you almost could not look at when running full steam.
And when they were used in a plane in sunlight, they were bright and visible, but if they didn't have that high output they had, you would not be able to see them, I think you need way more output than the one in the video!
I'm afraid that there is a reason that the "other rings" cost what they do.
But nevertheless, a great idea !

Thanks for the feedback.

I do have one or two tricks up my sleeve with the current unit. :)

Nevertheless, i will do a flight test soon.

Nice ingenuity Lior but; I am fairly certain you will find these lights do not produce the same effect as production units in full daylight.
I think Carsten's comments are dead on....

Thanks Todd ! coming from you - it means a lot.

As i said i have a few tricks im testing right now about the lights intensity. stay tuned.

BTW, i never said these would work identical to the production usnits. but if these would work 80% as good, but cost 60% less - thats still a good deal ! :D

hi Tod

Yesterday I saw the unit works and it looks great :)
I hope the weather will allow us and we can see it working in daylight

How do you plan on accomplishing this without increasing the voltage???...LED's are rated at a specific forward voltage (Differing colors and intensities can have different voltage requirements...) and if you go a slight hair above their rated voltage they actually shine less brightly and will burn out more rapidly...

$100 sounds expensive compared to the RC Castle system which also includes nav lights.

$18 for 70mm, $20 for 90mm.

I think some of the guys here are mixing apples and oranges...:) The AB rings from Todd and Airfighter.eu are
extremely bright and a video trying to capture the glow will just burn out completely. I know there have been many
attempts of making rings out of cheap "hi-intensity" diodes, but the only thing that really counts is what you see when
you take them outside and look at it in broad daylight. Many diodes look very bright on the building table and even in
bright lamp light at home, but competing with daylight and sunshine is really tough! Not saying that it can't be done,
but there is a specific amount of light coming out of a diode at a specific voltage - and the ones that show clearly on
a bright day are - well - expensive..

How about this guys ? 6S lipo version seems to work well and show well - flight testing soon, as the weather clears out.

RE: NEW Afterburner LED rings - will this interest jet pilots ?

Lots of people put up photos or videos of the afterburner rings or landing and strobe lights etc. But they are usually in the workshop, or outside in the twilight on the ground. And always with the camera up close. They rarely seem to have photos/video of it in the air in normal bright daylight at normal flying distance. I once fitted a model with a lighting system that came with hazard warnings not to look at it as it was so bright. On its own it lit up the workshop. You couldn't see them in flight! When someone shows video of afterburner rings in flight on a bright sunny day and we can see it, I will believe it.
