gyro

IM builing a f18f skymaster and i have a g154 gyro just laying around was woundering if i can use this for just my nose wheel steering????? im running all jr servos but my gyro is a futaba THANKS SCOTT

RE: gyro

I know little about gyros, except they help stabilize/smooth out flight by controlling control surfaces, sort of like having a computer controliling the filght in the real jets??, so I was wondering what would be the advantage of running a gyro on the nose steering?

Tim.

Yes you can use a Futaba gyro on a JR servo
I run a futaba GY240 in my F-86 and my F-15 on the nose wheel only on both jets. If it is a gyro that you manually set the sensitivity, start with about 25% on the gyro if you do it through the TX use the same. If it has a heading hold on the gyro and a normal mode you will want to use the Normal mode. You will want to set the heading hold sensitivity to 0.

RE: gyro

I've owned planes where gyro's were a must on the nose... The 3 Yellow F-18 we built didn't need a gyro.. very honest & right down the runway...No real harm in useing it.. just make sure the sensitivity is good, and you have enough throw to turn around on the runway.

Good luck,

I use a gyro on the nosewheel of all my jets.

Gyro's help reduce your workload on take off and help keep the jet straight with uneven braking.

With a gyro, when you give your jet a steering input it changes its course without any "bowing" like a jet without a gyro. And there is no problem with using a futaba gyro with JR servos.

Glad Scott ask this. I have wondered if this would help but I thought they would be more Valuable on rudder or Ailerons?? The type of jet I fly, I don't have any Probs with a straight take-off. Thanks all and Merry Christmas.

Hello,

Where did you install your gyro? First, I though about install it close to the main landing gear. But maybe it is fine in the nose?

RE: gyro

SAAB, I think the newer Gyro's has leniency toward this but it has always been my understanding to install the gyro as close to the pivotal CG that you can get it.

I am also a fan of a gyro on the nose wheel, I am completeing my SkymaterL-39 and I made a platform last nite to mount the gyro. I am useing a no thrill cheap gyro and I mount it as far forward as I can get it.

the further to the nose you can get it, the smoother the roll will be. Do NOT use a heading hold gyro. I have one on my Boomerang XL and my SM Hawk and now the SM L-39

I have been using gyros on Ailerons and rudder for years. They work great. Lately I have been using crow on most of my jets so I only have the gyro hooked up to one aileron. It still makes the plane fly smoother. Dan

"Work Load" Geez would not want to work up a sweat there eh! :D I was thinking of installing one on my throttle, my thumb is getting tired moving up and down and its really annoying me...:)

Thank you for your feedback. I will install it in my Gripen.

Hey guys,
Post the gyros you favor to use for this. specifically the ones that can be put in normal mode without having to eat up an extra control channel.

Goose

I use a Futaba Gy240 in my F-15 And My Sabre. It is a simple manuelly adjusted Gyro. I believe my setting is about 25-30% on the dial of the gyro. It works very well

I had extra gyros from my heli days and used my G410. but GWS has a $35.00 gyro plug and play type set up and works great.

Has anyone ever used a Jr. G450? Just wondering if it would be a good one to use on jets.

any gyro would work fine, just DO NOT use heading hold mode..........

Hello Mark,

What is your setting gain on your jet aircraft with the gyro installed in the nose cone? 50% or less?

RE: gyro

I performed some test today with this gyro installed on my jet. http://www.miniplanes.fr/images/ESK-EK2-0704B.jpg
Unfortunately, it doesn't work... the jet do not go straight, but make a curve, difficult to correct... terrible...
The problem is the neutral. After the gyro initialisation, the neutral of the steering servo change and is a few different from the radio neutral. I tried to set the neutral from the radio, but each time I restart the gyro, the neutral move again... [:@]
Of course, when I start the gyro, the jet doesn't move.
Do you know if that is normal?

I could use it on landing ??Auto-throttle :D

RE: gyro

After taking a lot of advice I have just ordered one of these: http://www.acteshop.de/product_info....oducts_id=2038
This will be used for smoothing out ailerons. I have used cheap gyros on steering with good results in the past, but I am advised that a lot of gyros "drift" in the course of a flight, requiring constant re-trimming. Apparently this ACT one does not do this. We will see.

RE: gyro

hi
if your e sky gyro is anything like the top end futaba heli ones, you may need to toggle the aux switch to memorise the neutral point after you have it trimmed in a straight line , before powering down check or find a setup manual.... . .refrerence to drifting, the early day , and cheap gyros used to drift in flight, but ONLY in heading hold

Thank you for your answers, I will try to toggle the switch if it can memorise the neutral.
Also, I have read on the Futatba forum this:
"Over time I notice some slight drift in my gyro, its not a programming issue as everything is set up correctly. It's just that after quite a few flights, the tail drifts slightly to one side. Is this a defect in my Gyro? Should I send this in to be repaired?
Before sending this in to the service center, you may want to try one quick fix. Remount your sensor on a new piece of foam tape. Whether you remount it in the same place or not, just make sure that you use new foam tape. The sensor is so delicate that it can detect even the slight amount of wear in the foam tape itself. If you are using the GY401, and you have it mounted on just one piece of foam tape, try using a second piece of foam tape when you remount it, this should eliminate the drift that may occur. Just remember that you will not need to use as much gain if you use the second piece of tape."

So, as I have used a very thin foam tape, I will also the big one tape I used on my GY401.
If the jet do not go straight when braking all the weapons are destroyed... :(

RE: gyro

I removed my GY401 from my Augusta 109 :( and try it in the jet. Perfect! The 401 has a fonction to memorise the trim: start in AVSC mode (or toggle the switch 3 times in less than 1 sec...).
Just a question about the GY401: I do not need the AVSC mode, so now the trim is memorised, can I start in normal mode? I tried and the trim looks ok (perfect neutral position) but the LED has intermittent flashing (message error). So...
Because during the pre-flight of jet, I prefer not to add another switch... Sure one day I will forget it and fly with the AVSC... [:o]

here is the new gyro I am putting in my New Skymasters L-39. very easy to use, nose gear steering servo plugs into the gyro and the gyro plugs right into the receiver or the Y with the rudder.....
