Scale models 3D-flying
Very few full size jets can do 3D maneuvers - some of the Sukhoi's can flip and spin like fun fly-planes,
but what are your feelings about 3D-flying with F-16s, Eurofighters, F-15s etc? Should we fly them like the originals fly, or is it OK to hover, flip and torque roll scale jets? Tor |
RE: Scale models 3D-flying
Occasionally fun to watch but not when other jets are flying a regular pattern. Too distracting and high potential for a mid-air. Save it for the noon time demo.

Hi, Tor
the Likai and me like the 3 D flight as the Seba can do, I made the super light version of F-16 1/6 for Seba (dry weight 15kg, painted in the mould for TB color), so, i also make one for my self, here are videos for 3 D of F-16 1/6 by Sebastiano Silvestri , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMpMbuvePt4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIWMTLda3jY Best regards Anton |
RE: Scale models 3D-flying
Please consider for a moment that occasionally life imitates the models. The world aerobatic championships were held in Oklahoma City back in 1996 (http://events.fai.org/aerobatics/EventDetails.asp?id=13) During the awards cerimonies at a local foot ball stadium Sean McMurtry TOC pilot did a routine with a 1/4 scale aerobatic model which included hovering and torque rolls. He got standing ovation from the worlds best 1:1 pilots. Ever since that day THEY've been trying to get enough power to imitate what the models can do.
Yes, scale planes should usually fly in a scale like maner, but as said above, it doesn't hurt to expand the envelope:D |
RE: Scale models 3D-flying
I don't really get the appeal of 3D flying period. I enjoy Pattern, or any aerobatic style that really flows together, hovering airplanes, I don't really get the draw. I've played with it, but I don't enjoy it enough to bother. Jets...... Well, I think it's really cool that we have the technology to put that much thrust to weight ratio's into a jet, but again, I don't get it, just my opinion though :)

RE: Scale models 3D-flying
The first time you Torque Roll a 40% plane 2 foot off of the deck you will understand why they do it. But I think this is more geared towards 3D jets.
I say anything that brings more people to the turbine world the better off we will be. |
RE: Scale models 3D-flying
To me its like 3D heli flying.
Watching it bores me to tears, or scares the life out of me. But actually having a go I love it! Flyings flying! Every type ( Barr U control ) Appeals to me, and given the chance I will give it a go. I was really, really taken a back by how much of a challenge getting my head around the 3D jet thing was. I have done a fair amount of 3D fix wing and heli flying and found the jet side of things to b totally different. |
RE: Scale models 3D-flying
As long as it's not causing problems (safety etc) for anyone else, and if they are not doing their flight as part of some scale competition, why the heck does anyone care how someone else flies their own model ? It's their toy to play with as they see fit.
The last time I heard someone gripe about a 3D maneuver by a jet not being 'scale', the guy who was doing the complaining had just finished flying his scale B17 at seriously non-scale speeds, yet he saw nothing wrong with that. I guess it's always easier to complain about the speck in someone else's eye, than take care of the log in your own. Gordon |
RE: Scale models 3D-flying
To each his own, if anyone wants to 3D his jet whatever scale or not is ok to me. But not if it is at the same time other jets are flown as they are meant to.

RE: Scale models 3D-flying
Just don't do it in the middle of the field when 4 other guys are trying to fly and might want to take off and land. I have seen some of the best flyers in the world do it and after 30 seconds of it it 's ok but can you do anything else?

Do what you like.

RE: Scale models 3D-flying
Hi Tor
I think 3D-jet is UGLY!! Each time I watch a jet-video, that turns to be a 3D-video, I stop the video at once! Full-scale jet-3D is ok but modeljet-3D simply looks like small models out of control in the wind. :) |
