ASYMMETRIC ENGINE SETUP SU-27

1 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys,

I would like to know if anyone has any experience with asymmetric engine setups? I'm keen to purchase a FeiBao SU-27. My only problem is I don't have two engines to suit but I have a perfectly good 160.
Would it be possible to fly this model with an offset engine setup? Or is this a really bad idea? Should I be looking into modifying so I could mount the engine in the centre?

If there is anyone out there with an offset engine setup are you using a gyro on rudder or have an offset tailpipe to counter the swing?

Cheers,

Paul

Paul,

Mike Selby has been working on an F-111 with a similar configuration, he originally built it as twin-turbine and then converted it to a single asymmetric setup. See this thread:

In his case the engine outlets are much closer to center, so you would probably have to consider if it would work for your SU-27. Mike is a great engineer and a master builder, and would probably welcome a question or two from you.

Paul, I flew an Avonds F15 for years with a P120 in one side and the fuel tank in the other, you couldn't tell.

People went potty when I said on this forum I intended to fly my Fei Bao 1:7 F15E with a P160 in one side and a G Booster 160 in the other, again, you cannot tell.

Its been done successfully with a number of models F-15's Mig-29's so no reason why not with the SU-27, and no need for gyro's either. Not a bad idea actually I was going to do a twin install but I might seriously have a closer look into doing the same single set up for our demo model SU-27 and use a single Merlin M-160

Heres a video of Hekko Gartners Fiber Classics Mig-29 with a single Booster 160 installed just to prove the theory. No reason the Mig 29 and SU-27 should not perform very similar with the single install I reckon :D

You should be able to do this. You will probably want to angle the thrust tube outboard between 4 and 5 degrees. A rudder gyro is helpful.

Ha! That's my video! I completely forgot about it! Not too shabby job of recording that if I do say so myself! I need to do something about the wind noise though. I guess use an external mic with foam around it, but I don't know. If only I was going to this years Florida Jets, sniff sniff. Any who, glad ya'll enjoyed it! Made the trip that much more worthwhile!

I think you have to be careful with High throttle/low speed flying. Otherwise it should work.
