BVM Maverick
 

I have a partially started Maverick and was wonderiing if anyone has any Mav parts or accessories laying around their shop? Not sure what I really need as I don't have a set of plans or instructions (could use those too), but a start would be some tip tanks, formers in the fan area, gear/servo hatch covers, etc.

Hello Sean

For a start make sure you get BVM flex plates for the gear. On my viper the guy had wood blocks for the nose gear and it broke 2 times on me with nice nice landings. I intsalled the BVM flex plates for the nose gear and it is now lighter and much stronger and all the problems are gone. What fan are you going to use?

Not sure what fan yet, still reviewing the airframe. I have the BVM flex mounts and the new style nose gear. The mains look older, but are pnuematic. It's a dual cockpit version...i assume that was also called the Maverick?

I don't think you have many options for the fan. The BVM jets require the Viojett fan, they're the only ones that will fit being that they are a smaller diameter than the Dynamax/Ramtech fans. You'd have to change the inlets and tailpipe ducting if you wanted to use the bigger fan.
I'm pretty sure the 2 seat was the Maverick, later the single seat I think was the Maverick pro.

That's not completely correct... The maverick has been flown with the TF-4000, Stu-Max and E-Turbax all with the stock ducts and a small adaptor...

Thanks guys, the Stumax was my first thought as I have an extra one sitting here...however it will likely be some time before i get into the model so fan options may have changed by then. I'm looking to gut as much information and missing items as I can so when I do start i know i have everything.

Sorry, I'm still thinking glow ducted fan, don't know squat about EDF's haha. If it was glow ducted fan you want, I think you're stuck with a Viojett :)

Forgive another correction, I have a Maverick kit ready for building (turbine conversion) I have a set of inlet ducting and thrust tube to suit a Dynamax or Ramtech. However they will not give any improvement over the Viojet since this has been previously tested and found to be dissapointing. Ron.

Thanks guys. I called BV and ordered a set of plans and assembly manual. Figured that would be the best place to start (novel, i know).

Ron big difference in sound with the eturbax vs. stumax huh?...but I know you already know the pros of more blades. [8D]

Wing servo/gear covers are just made from a sheet of polyply, the template for these will be on your plans when you get them, i am in the middle of building and converting a maverick to turbine, i have the mounts for the viojet going spare if you need them, also the thrust tube and wing tanks all brand new and untouched as i am not using them on my mav

thers a guy here in az that is using a elec d-max if i am not mistaken in a mav pro.look up Bob Ruff at rcgroups and ask him.he is the resident elec jet guru having spent many years and still is very active in it.he will be of great help to you.BRUFF @ RCGROUPS.

That Maverick in the 2nd video that Ron posted is mine, one of the 2 seater earlier ones.Gotta say that a 4000wattTF4000, DS-94, or Stumax fan will be a lot easier in this airframe as compaierd to shoehorning ina Dynamax or E-Turbaxtype setup. It really helps having that little bit smaller fan case diameter when it comes to finding room for the flight batteries, etc.
As well, the TF or DS 120mm and various 110mm fan setupsweigh less than any Dynamax.
My Maverick has flown with E-Turbax, TF4000, Stumax 12 blade SM110-52, and lately the new 4 blade Stumax SM110-45.

BTW - The first video is Darren Jakels E-Turbax Mav; it goes really well and the E-Turbax is cost effective&pretty light too. Just a more thought out install with the bigger size E-Turbax.

Ask anyone at that AZ jets or at last 2009 E-Jets in Ohio how well the Maverick performs with Stumax power.....nothing to sneeze at.

Sean, you might give BVM a call and see if they have any of their older EVF units still available. I purchased mine last month and saved some decent $. Now that he has the EVF2 he might be sold out but its worth a try. The EVF should be a dead drop in replacement.

Thanks for chiming in. My thought at the moment is to go with the stumax 110-52 as I have one without a home at the moment, and agree that the small dia will make things a lot easier. You never know, but the time I get to putting the plane together Stu may have another development in that same size shroud to take advantage of. I have experience with a eturbax in the JHH A7 and space was really at a premium, not only for the packs but all the control horns in the wing, servo/rx in the fuse, etc. I've seen a couple videos of the Maverick on the stumax and feel that the performance is ideal for a sport jet.

Now that I've gone with the higher blade count, it's tough to go back. Not ruling out the BV fan, but it's not leading the race.

Bob that sounds like a better plan than mine. Mine has been started but is in pretty rough shape. trying to determine what I want to redo and what I want to repair. I really don't want to invest a ton of time in it, but cosmetically I'll need to put in some elbow grease to make it presentable. I'll post some pics over in RCG when I get into it more.

Sean I picked up this very rough and old viper with a cracked wing and a ton of other problems and it took only about 2 weeks of work. It was not much work at all and I am loving it. These old BVM planes are great flyers and very easy to convert. Your mavrick will have flaps and a better wi ng for slow flight then my viper so you will have a perfect plane.

Ron, bellow is a pic prom the BVM Installation manual of the Leading Edge Droops.

Installation:

- trim part to scribe line
- lay masking tape 5/8" from leading edge top and bottom
- trim away hatched area shown in fig. 3 until top and bottom edges line up with tape. trim ends as required.
- paint part now if desired, use cut away material to test paint
- cut double sided tape down centerline, trim to length, and apply to inside edges
- carefully line up top edge of droop to the tape and stick down
- insert waxed paper between bottom of wing and droop
- pull bottom edge of droop away from wing to remove backing of double sided tape. Slide waxed paper out, then press down bottom edge

What you can expect:

- shorter take off
- high "G" tight turns with no snapping tendency
- difficult to make snap roll
- safer and slower approach speeds
- slower and more stable landings
- avoid high "G" inverted manuevers

Hi Vasek, I am grateful to you for taking the time and effort to pass on the info' on the l.e. strakes. My concern has always been the claim that the model tip stalls unpredictably. I wasn't aware that there were so many other benefits. I can now approach the build/conversion with a little more enthusiasm. Ron.

Anyone know of an outfit that cuts foam cores for the maverick? Mine are in pretty bad shape (i've seen crashed wings in better shape and these aren't even built!). I don't believe BV stocks these anymore so my options look to be (a) rework these ones, (b) cut my own, or (c) perhaps order an electra wing kit. If anyone has a built up electra and would be kind enough to give me some root rib dimensions including spar location i'd be grateful.
