The Fei Bao version would be the closest candidate I reckon. I was impressed with its extremely low airframe weight for its size. An 18 lber would not be a great option better with a 22-25 lb thrust at least from a sealed strip and upto a 30 lb for short and/or grass and plenty in reserve should do the job well.

Cheers- Marty

Yea-I knew there was a 22/30 pounder out there. Guess I'm gonna have to take my old Sky Glass Mig, get the specs off of it and lay one up to get one!! Ha! Thanks Marty.

You might want to look into the BZ MiG-21, it's a bit smaller than the FB and it's not an arf, so you do have to get your hands dirty. The prefabrication and quality is excellent though....and for a pretty OK price.
I picked up a kit last year and am planing on getting her together next winter....

Weighs in at about 20-22lbs and should fly ok with 16-18lbs with power to spare. He does reccomend 22lbs+, but that just makes it a rocket.....

Hank, Thanks so much for sending this. I already have a e-mail in to them. What all comes with the kit you bought Hank? I ask them to send photo's of the kit. Thanks again. Roy

Hy Roy,

you can find some pictures of the kit as well as some construction photos here:
http://www.rc-network.de/forum/showthread.php?t=57395

The kit is a glass fuse, nosecone, canopy frame and hatches, plus sheeted foam core wings with all internals....gear mounts and wing mount ready, control surfaces attached as elastic-flaps (no gap on top). You have the choice between a scale wing and a sport wing, which has slightly more span.
Also included is a custom tank that fits perfectly in the hump just aft of the cockpit, holding just short of a gallon. The all-moving tail mechanism and the formers needed are also included and ready to be glued in.

I think it's a very good value for the price, and Bernd Zahn, the owner of BZ, is also a very helpful and nice guy.

Hope this helps

Best regards
Hank

Hank, Very big help and thanks so much for sighting me in on this thread and info. With all the box full of lumber kits I have built though the years I still consider this one an ARF. Ha. for this price even at the convertion, I can't lay one up for it. Unless It's just to put myself through it. the kit it's self lends way to do a little or a lot scale wise. have you built one?? Roy

RE: Mig 21

I went by and picked up my kit end of last year, but have not started on it.....i'm hoping to get it build over the winter. Should be no big problem, i've test-fitted the parts and found them to be a good fit. Most of the work will probably go into the detailing, as the fuse does not have any panellines molded in....i'll probably just draw them on with pencil and then do some aging with artists chalk....worked like a charm on my F-86 :-)

The ground work is there to do what you want to do. I did the convertions and the size is really kinda big for a 18# push with the exception being like you said the Wt. of it. 93" long with a 46" WS is a lot for a 18# turbine. How does the design give way for the wing attatchment and the full flying stab multi links?

Why get a box of non scale work for $1000 (no gear) when you can get a beautifully painted and detailed FB Mig-21with working gear doors, speed brakes and accessories for a few hundred more dollars?? (no gear). The FB Mig will fly on a P-80 off tarmac.

RE: Mig 21

Vincent. Isn't the FB a little larger than this Mig???

Miniflyer 05-02-2010 03:00 PM

RE: Mig 21

V, i don't kow about the price of fbjets in the US, but the MiG-21 currently prices around 2000 euros plus gear, more than 3 times the price of a BZ....and that with it being only about 6" longer. Aside from that i really do not trust the chinese arf quality after having seen some very poor internals....i guess it's up to everybody to decide for himself what he wants, but i know the quality with the BZ is good and it will not tear up on me because it has poor internals....
If you feel happier with a FB then go buy it :-)

Roy, if you look on page 5 of the rc-network thread you will find pictures of the stab and wing mount...if you want i can take a few pictures of the kit when i get home in 3 weeks
A 18lb turbine will fly it just fine if you don't cram it up with a bunch of features and build it light. After all, it's basically just a long tube with small wings....not a lot of drag. I've seen it fly on 20lbs and it was an excellent performer.

Vin, If you know of one for 1200/1400 bucks stear me toward it. As far as the gear, No prob, I machine most of mine. Thanks Roy

PS: i own two FB Mig-21`s and have over 200flights between them, they are well built and good flyers. That is me in the add along side the Egyptian scheme.Like i said why buy a box of work when you can get the FB for a few more dollars.

RE: Mig 21

Vin, I have always admired your Mig 21's and the way you fly them. A mig 21 was my first prop jet way back. I agree with you and way you look at this But, the Diff in $1,000 and $2800 is a big jump for me when I can do a lot of it myself. The $1,000 kit is still a far cry from what I was considering which was laying one up myself. Thanks Man. Roy

RE: Mig 21

They are close in price without gear?? the BZ is $1000 with no gear correct??

RE: Mig 21

If you count just the kit by it's self you are very correct. But if you count the size Diff where I would have to spend another 3,000 for a turbine to push it NO. The $1,000 is almost larger than I wanted from the git go. Oh I would love to have one 1/5 scale but not right now. I would love to have a smaller one about the size of my old Sky Glass mig but laying it up, would be on my long list right now. Mabey by the time I got around to laying one up I would have a bigger turnine to push the GJC Mig. Who Knows this day and time. You need to load them Migs up and come on out to the First in Flight!!!!!

Roy
