Which Radio?
 

I want to buy a new radio on 2.4 but I am not sure which to get. I am looking at the JR 9503 or the Futaba 10 channel. I have been with JR for a long time and I really like the looks and feel of the JR But I have heard that the FASST is better than DSM. Anyone here flying DSM in jets without problems (brownouts etc).

How about the Aurora 9? Anyone flying it?

I think FASST is the better system but just be aware that the 10ch futaba is really a 8ch with two on/off channels or non proportional channels.

The FASST 12FG is 12 proportional channels plus two switched and with the MPDX-1 add on's can have 26 proportional channels, sold my Spektrum/JR and have never regreted it.

I am flying the JR 9X2 (same as the 9303) on 36 mhz & bought the Futaba 10 channel when I went 2.4 as I think the channel hopping idea is better. Most 2.4 radios use channel hopping including JR with their DSM-J system.

The Futaba has worked perfectly so far but so does the JR. I've only used it in an old beater & an EDF (Habu) so far.

The Futaba feels a much cheaper radio than the JR. There was a thread in the giant scale forum about a guy with problems with an Aurora 9: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9693011/tm.htm

FASST Futaba 12 fg

12 propo + 2 digital = 14.

3 years on FASST on jets, props, heli's not one glitch or twitch.[8D]

I really don't think there is much between JR and Futaba when they are used and installed properly. You can't expect a manufacturer to be held responsible for crap installs :D

I've heard of failures with both, the other week a Futura went free flight on FASST with a 14MZ and i've heard of lockouts with spektrum, both down to the way the radio was installed. I've not had a glitch on JR since moving from Futaba 2 years ago. It really is personal preference, i just like the fact that you have a bit of redundancy with the jr satelite rx's

I like the JR 2.4 radios, I just don't like all those tinny receivers stuck inside the fuse. Futaba performs the same function with one receiver.

Pick your favorite radio, the one you love because of its available mixes, colors, name or whatever, and then install Weatronic for the RF link, best of both worlds ;)

I own and use both systems, I prefer Futaba FASST.

Rock solid for more than 3 years.

I really love my Eflight transmitter. Its 2.4, and bindable. Combined with a Weatronic rx its the best of both worlds! I use this for all of my jets. Plus it has the added advantage of looking really cool. you know, kinda star trekish. I just love it.

Let's don't forget 72mhz is still around... 20+ yrs. of flying, never a hit or a glitch with any of my JR equip. MAX 4 to 10 X... I am slowley moving into 2.4, but it seems to me that with all the stuff everyone is useing ( flight boxes, regulators,etc.) it totally goes away from the KISS Principal I was taught from day one. I guess I'm just old school... Hell, I'm still useing NiCad Batteries[X(].

Well let's see in the last week there has been threads on the Aurora and Spectrum causing destruction to big dollar airplanes.

Neither of them radios have impressed me. It all depends on what kind of money you want to spend on your radio.

I am not of the school the more money you spend the better the radio. I have a new 2.4 radio in its second season. I have flown electrics and nitro on it and have not had a single problem of any sort.

It is an off brand radio. the Turnigy 9x, with a HK 2.4 module and flying six different airplanes with this radio. Total cost for everything: Radio, module, lipo battery pack, 6 receivers under $250.00. So it is all a matter of personal preference. I am putting together a big gasser and a ducted fan jet and will use this radio on it. Because it is a tried and true system for me with over 300 flights on various aircraft I am comfortable enough to try it. I will pull two receivers from other planes to do this and install new in the old planes.

Like I said personal preference.

Hitec Aroura 9. I have just swapped all my JR stuff to Hitec. AFHSS like the rest of them

I have bench tested it now for about 10 hours and no problems. I have it in less expensive electric models and no problems. Yes there have been issues with dead band, latency and 1 reported case of a dry solder joint on the tx board. There have been no reported cases of signal loss or brown outs. I note a solder dry joint could happen to any electronic device or radio tx, so irrelevant in my book! I also like Futaba if you want to spend more and get less!!!!

I like my 10C, sold my 9C to get it. I also enjoy my 5U and 6X, even a 6EXAP I use. I have three 2.4 Ghz receivers, but haven't switched over any planes yet, still on FM. The 10C has both 72Mhz and 2.4 on this early model. I like the screen, programming, and feel.
The most my planes have are 6 or 7 servos and 6 channels, so it's really more radio than I need right now.

I'm tempted to let it go and stick with the old 6 channel radios, my frequencies are clear now, and used receivers cost about $20-25.

99% of brown outs or signal loss is due to user install. With correct power supply to the Aroura rx it is bullet proof. In range check mode transmitting at 10mw I get near 200 meters. With my JR I was lucky to get 30 meters! There are litrally thousands of Hitec Aroura's out there now. Please show me a post showing signal loss or brown out?:eek:

Nothing wrong with 72 mhz FM, I have 6 and 8 channel radios I am still using on other aircraft too. My Turnigy 9x I still need more recievers for Then my start to part with FM radios. I really like the 9x. I will keep one eight for my simulator.

You can get good used ones cheap! They will do the job too.

Like I said in my previous post it depends on what you are looking for and how much money you want to spend. It will all boil down to personal preference.

I have two of the 7C 2.4 Futaba radios both are 100%, I have never used anything but Futaba all my many 7.2 worked great so I stayed with futaba when going to the 2.4!

The Airtronics SD-10G is so good that JR and Futaba want to keep it a secret.
