Stuff to Make Smoke

I have a Jetcat smoke pump and all the fittings. But I confess to not knowing what is the cheapest or best 'substance/fuel' to use to pump into the eflux to make the smoke.

I am sure this has been asked before but thought I would ask again. I am in the UK so stuff we can buy over here would be nice to know.

Thanks in advance

Dennis

Full scale guys use "Corvis Oil" common use is concrete form release oil. It is spayed on concrete forms to aid in their release. I have used it in models with gasoline engines and it works great. It has a lot of paraffine in it. Never tried it on turbines but don't see why it won't work. If you know someone in the construction business you can probably obtain a little to try.

Just a thought

Two gallons of diesel...one quart of ATF and a bottle of Brute 33.

RE: Stuff to Make Smoke

I use the concrete release agent with no problems at all.
http://www.fastenal.com/web/products...0207288&ucst=t
Or
you could go with the super dri alot more $
5 Gallon http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXAN65&P=ML
1 Gallon http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXAN64&P=ML

The only difference I notice between the two is the release agent is thicker then the super dri, and the super dri puts out more of a whiter smoke compared the release agent that seems to put out a grayish white

I use the concrete release from fastenal- freedom form release I think it's called. I ran out recently and have been using some corvis oil. Robart is now selling smoke oil, it's about $12 per gallon.

We use Powerbox smoke oil, no smell and works well. We will have stock from next week. It's available in 3ltr and 5ltr bottles

RE: Stuff to Make Smoke

For those that would like colored smoke, or spoke from somewhere else that the tail pipe, here is a recipe that works well ... i think there might be a video or two of this mixture being used on RC jets .. I remember seeing one where a big SM MB339 had red and green smoke coming out of the wingtips, and the white from the exhaust pipe .. very neat and quite impressive .. you might have to experiment with the mixture, the baking soda in particular to get a slow but good smoke rate...

- 6 parts potassium nitrate (get it on amazon.com)
- 4 parts sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 6 parts powdered organic dye (blue works best)
-thick cardboard tube around 1" diameter
-duct tape
-firework fuse or model rocket igniter

Make the Colored Smoke Mixture

1. Mix 6 parts potassium nitrate with 4 sugar in a saucepan over low heat. It's a 3:2 ratio,
2. The sugar will carmelize and brown. Stir the mixture continuously until it resembles smooth peanut butter.
3. Remove the mixture from heat.
4. Stir in baking soda . The baking soda is added to slow down the combustion when the smoke bomb is ignited.
5. Add powdered organic dye. . Stir to mix well.
6. Construct the smoke device while the mixture is still hot and pliable.

Assemble the Smoke device

1. Fill cardboard tube with the warm smoke mixture.
2. Push a dowel or pencil down into the center of the mix (doesn't have to be all the way to the bottom but should be enough that the pen stands in the mixture)
3. Let the mixture harden (about an hour).
4. Remove the dowel
5. Insert a firework fuse or set up with model rocke igniter. Push pieces of cotton balls into the hole to tamp the fuse securely inside the smoke device. Be sure
6. Wrap with duck tape securely, making sure to leave hole open where igniter or fuse is.

this can be mounted inside a wing tip, in the tail, or if a plane has them in the wingtip tanks...

wojtek,

Good to hear from you, still flying jets? I remember the really cool Bobcat comp at Florida Jets with the spectacular paint job.

Alistair.

P.S. Dennis did'nt mean to hi-jack your thread.

I can get smoke cartridges of all sizes, colors. Have to buy by the case, a gross. A six inch long, one inch dia cartridge, about three bucks. These are what they call "cold burn", is the same company that makes them for most of the show aircraft including the military. Yes, you can make your own and hope you get the mixture correct the first time, however, I think for the price and convenience I would buy them pre-made. Just a bit of fyi. Enjoy!

I played with making my own, and it works great, but its definitely a messy drawn out process ... I would be interested in buying some ready made ones .. how long do they burn for?

I have tried everything.
My preferences:
concrete forming oil: obtained 45$ at local Fastenal dealer - thicker derivative of corvis oil. part number is 0207288 Freedom Form Release oil.
Robarts new oil, it just came out
Diesel with either ATF or fuel injector cleaner.
Super dri is good but expensive.

What Im doing now is the fastenal oil thinned with about 1/2% diesel. the oil is very thick and hard on pumps forcing it through the nozzles.

It doesn't really matter because you are not burning it, you are vaporizing it. so experiment and have fun with it. the concrete oil smells better too.

Using baby oil looks to work ok at 2 dollars Aus for 500ml.

Tried the new Robart smoke oil last month with great results. Very thick smoke that hangs awhile, SM MB339 with PST 1300, Tamjets smoke system.
Smoke injectors are at the rear of the tail pipe, as in full scale.

Tried it, nothing like as good and disperses quickly in the sky where Powerbox oil stays. It also has almost no smell

Definitely not a fan of the Diesel/home made brew smoke fluid, i do not think the cost of the ready made fluid is expensive. I have been using the 3W 'strawberry' mix but as the supplier is out of stock i have switched to the Powerbox fluid. Have yet to try it, but have no doubt it will be every bit as good as the 3W fluid.

Anyone know any brands of the concrete release oil in the UK

The form release oil worked great for me. I did notice one of my buddies tried some of it in his plane and it did not smoke nearly as well so I think it has a lot to do with your smoke system setup. I had a Sullivan Skywriter pump with twin Tam sticks and it smoked like there was no tomorrow!!
