As a minimum, use a throttle return spring.

I don't know if I have a fail safe on my truck, but the steering's always the first thing to go. (same battery)
Does that mean I have the fail safe?

A fail Safe is always a good idea, but you need to test the radio to see what the distance is that you can operate it. Some Cen radios work flawlessly, others have bad electronics, or bad crystals. If you do have a bad radio, talk to Cen and they will replace it for free.
