4 stroke Kyosho Vanning Monster Truck???
Hi guys. I'm kinda new to the forum and wanted to run something by you guys to see what you think. I used to really be into the rc scene about 15 years ago. I've had many cars over the years and I'm thinking about pulling out some of my old toys and start playing again. I've got an old Kyosho Vanning (old school 1/8 scale) in pretty good shape that I'm thinking about putting a OS Surpass 48 4-stroke engine on. The motor is old but new in the box (don't think they even make that size anymore). I think the chassis on the vanning should be plenty strong. It's build very well with all aluminum frame, chain drive with steal diff's, . I'm gonna do some suspension mods and convert it into a monster truck. What do you guys think? Am I insane? I think it would be a pretty cool truck if I can get it together. Let me know what you think or any advice. Thanks

RE: 4 stroke Kyosho Vanning Monster Truck???
Any of you guys have a Kyosho Vanning or seen it run? It was quite the thing back in the day (50-60 mph stock). I haven't seen many of the new 1/8 scale trucks run. My dad just bought a Titan Twin so I've got a lot of work to do to try to build something to stay with him. That's why I'm considering going with a big 4-stroke in the Vanning. I might be getting a used T-Maxx also but I think the Vanning would be a lot stronger than T-Maxx and hold up a lot better with a big engine like that. Any advice is appreciated.

sorry man .... a .27 in a truck set up will kill a huge .40+ cc
the 4 stroke will win off the line but the .27 will catch up any blow past very quick
go with a siro .27 pro... 3.1 hp and 38,000 rpms

My biggest concern for that truck would be replacement parts. Might be better off cleaning it & making it a shelf queen for later generations to Oooh & Aaahh over.

Will a 4 stroke turn enough RPM to engage the clutch properly?
Will a 4 stroke turn enough RPM to engage the clutch properly?
1) Gearing
2) Fuel Economy
3) Sound
4) Reliability
Yes, a .27 in a truck will probably go faster. A 4-stroke can still turn about 22,000 RPMs though. That's not impressive, but their massive torque allows you to use a much taller gear ratio. So most if not all of the speed would be gained back. Yes, I know you could change the gears just the same for a 2-stroke, but while you're doing that you'll also be using up roughly twice as much fuel.
Plus, the 4-strokes just sound so damn cool.

Thats good to know, thanks. I want to install a four stroke as well but was told not because of the lower rpm.
Thanks again

no, no. don't do that. a lot of people like the vanning. if it is in good shape, and you haven't begain your mods, i'll give you $450.00 for it.
you can then take the $$ and get something like an ofna dominator monster truck. and custom that out.
don't forget, it you put a lot of time and $$ into suppen out your vanning and it breaks, which ALL r/c cars do, it's going to be a
b!tch getting replacement parts.
you're better off modding someting new.
if you want to take me up on your offer IM me.

RE: 4 stroke Kyosho Vanning Monster Truck???
ya, I would sell it or save it and get something new.
You have a $$$ collectible classic right now. If you mod it the way you are talking, you will have a broken pile of junk in a couple of months with no replacement parts, and it will have lost it's value.
Sort of like taking a perfect 69 Camaro Z28, taking the body off and putting it on an old blazer frame. It will just kill the value and be impractical in the long run.
Do whatcha like, I just would keep the vanning for what it is, and start new.

Regarding the engine, ditto what Dale said.
The 48 Surpass is a classic mid-sized four-banger that is, as you thought, long out of production. Its replacement, the 52 Surpass, is a good engine, but not produced with the attention to detail that the older Surpass engines were.
I suspect that, if your engine is indeed NIB, you could get at least $200 for it on auction. Some old-time planker would love to have it.
Just FYI...

RE: 4 stroke Kyosho Vanning Monster Truck???
I agree
If you can sell the engine at a good price sell it and buy another one. Same with the truck. Then you can convert whatever truck you decide on buying into a four stroke.
I have a t-maxx with an OS .40 four stroke. I haven't stripped or broken any thing that had to do with me installing the engine. I was told it was because of the powerband a 4 stroke has that gives the gears and stuff a break.
Eventhoe I like the .40, it would be awesome if another of the same company(OS) would designe a new four stoke specially for cas/trucks. Eliminating the cooling issue. I am sure their is alot of extra ponnies on a fourstroke waiting to be let out.

Hoe do you keep an Airplane engine cool in a T-Maxx?? I would love to put a 4 stroke in mine. Would one of those fans work?

Hey BJAZ,
What old school? There is no such thing, It's "Been There Done That" [8D] and now with more money & more bills to paid [:@]. I just started to pull out my old toys. I'm currently overhauling my Vanning, the motor had lockup. It was in storage for over 10-12 years. It was fast, but it wasn't 50-60mph stock. What motor did you have in it and what gearing?
The newer cars/trucks with the two speed are faster. I was going to convert it to a two speed but it was easier to by a new truck. I'm waiting for my LST, it's on back order. Now, That's a Truck!
BTW, How you do in converting that Vanning?
