Tamiya QD Monster Beetle Review
Hi everyone,
Im looking for a really cheap car to stick my wireless cam on and go ramp jumping in my large garden.
I came across a 2nd hand deal that might be something interesting, but Im asking the experts (you guys ), if its worth it.
The deal is 30 dollar (incl. Shipping) for a Tamiya QD Monster Beetle.
He says its still okay, no nasty geargrinding sounds and such, hes a good friend of mine, so I think he is telling the truth.
Its a prebuilt little "Monster truck" thats running on a 280 motor. Perty skimpy, but large enough for a 35cm truck I guess..
Its got a loose cell battery compartment, thats rather bad, but I guess thats solvable by breaking out some plastic, shrinkwrapping a batterypack and putting in a tamiya plug instead of the lead springs that usually hold the batterys in place.
Id like to hear from someone about the power and suspention. Will it be powerfull enough to get up and over some ramps and bumps, and will the suspention take the beating?
If not, whats a good alternative? (Ive allready got a batterypack, Mechanic speed controller, Some servos, and reciever, so all I need is a cheap B-Brand chassis with motor)
I know a lot of you will think "Gah, another n00b that wants to get preformance for a dime and a dollar", and probably youre right.
All I want is a gimpy little walmart toy buggy or something to do some onboard cam stunting.
Best Regards,
Sven

Stampedes are killer for ther price. I'd spend $30 on the beetle just to have it on a shelf. The MB was one of the 1st real R/Cs I ever saw.

I had the original Blackfoot about 16 years ago (same as the Monster Beetle). It could really take a beating, but it also looked bigger than the ones in the photo. I'd buy it just for the price and the fact that it's vintage. The shocks were lame though. Super bouncy and air filled.

man, for 30 bux i say go for it!
nothing else will beat it for that price.
and the trucks at the lower end of the market can be a lot of fun.
so tell us how it goes

I also agree for $30 bucks you probably can't go wrong. But Tamiya's QD group is not like real RC cars. You seem to know this, so I don't think it will be a problem.
I always wanted the original Monster Beetle circa 1986. Great vehicle!
