The "nitro" fuel that we use is usually 20% nitromethane. 12% castor oil, and 68% Methanol. Adding Nitrous Oxide would greatly increase the power potential for the engine. If these engines ran on 95% Nitromethane like Top Fuel dragsters, then no, Nitrous Oxide would not increase the power output by much. The chemical formula for Nitromethane is CH3NO2. It already has its own oxygen to burn. Here are the facts:
>1 pound of typical unleaded gasoline from the pump requires 15 pounds of air to combust
>1 pound of pure nitromethane requires only 1.7 pounds of air to combust
Nitromethane burns much slower than gasoline. A nitromethane engine such as one in a Top Fuel Dragster uses close to 1 gallon of nitromethane per second. That's why you see the flames coming out of the pipes, the fuel hasn't had enough time to burn completely and is burning in the pipes.
