Default Where do I "Read" Head Temp?

Hello to all! We just purchased an infrared temp gun. We got it from MCM for about $70.00. It has a laser pointer and all.

Well after warmup, I ran it around the back yard and got it hot. Tried to read the temp and became confused. I got all kinds of different readings from the head.

The temp on the top of the cooling fins was around 205
The glow plug temp was around 190
If I measured the head screws, it was around 280

What is the proper procedure for measuring head temp?
Where is the proper location to get a temp reading?
Do I look for the highest temp that I can get?

Thanks for all of the help.

Default Good question!

I pretty much take the highest reading and assume thats it..
Thats the safe way.. but I'm not sure about the best and most accurate way!
ITs all about keeping the engine cool and if its running a little cooler than indended.. that works for me!

many say at the glow plug is the correct temp. It should also be the hottest so re do your readings. Those are pretty cool readings so your engine settings are ok

yes, take the temp of glow plug, but you still need to move around.

point to the glow plug, and slightly move around,

Cool, thanks! The highest temp that I could get was on the head bolts, I dont think that these bolts are aluminum. That may be why they are a little hotter than the rest of the head.

What is the highest temp that the engine should run?

for savage 21, always below 275.

generally 245 will be good for nitro engine
