I hate to post a which one is better...but
The latest Warhead or the Savage X SS? The only reason I ask is that while both are similarly priced, the Warhead comes with a radio and is RTR. But the savage is a bit tougher overall, from what I've heard. I'm narrowed down to either one of these vehicles from reading multiple posts and speaking with my local hobby shop. Any productive comments?

Savage X SS hands down over the warhead!
I would also suggest the Cen GST 7.7 or the Losi LST2. I have a Savage SS 4.6 and a GST 7.7, the GST whips up on my Savage. BUT i still love both trucks!

have you read the warhead section on rcu. that alone would deture me from even looking at one. the SAVAGE X- SS all the way.

RE: I hate to post a which one is better...but
Ok after long and hard thought on the subject while perusing various forums on various sites regarding each vehicle, I decided to go with the HPI 861 Savage X SS Kit which ran me a mere $397 after shipping. Now, I have another pair questions for all of you buffs out there so bear with my naive line of questioning.
1. Did I get in over my head or is this a reasonably not-so-difficult kit to put together? I'm pretty hand if that helps.
2. I need a radio recommendation with the knowledge that I will eventually put in the optional reverse drive.
With those questions answered, I do believe I will be well on my way to being back in the game. I appreciate your answers and look forward to them!

There is nothing to worry about putting these kits together, just follow the instructions carefully. I don't know about the savage itself but have built kits with no problems at all. use threadlock on all metal to metal screws.
I use the JR XS 3 radio. 3 channel (for reverse) multiple memories for set ups, synthesized system so no crystals needed and frequency changes, and its good value. You will however need better servos for steering (you would with all stock servos anyway)

Good to note, I'm going to go look that radio up right now as a matter of fact. Wow, that's a chunk of change. But if I'm going to do it I'll do it right and probably go for the JR XS 3. The servos that come with it...good enough?

Barely, you will be disapointed especially with the steering performance. You'ld be better off to to buy the radio w/o servos and use that money to get decent ones.

Radio - no servos

Radio - 1 servo

Decent steering servo

I'd go with the radio and one servo and get something like the 645mg for steering.
There are a lot of choices for radios and servos but I've used that combo for the Savage and it does pretty well. Of course if you've got more money you can always get a better radio (the Spektrum DX3 is a real nice choice) and stronger, faster servos but that could easily run to several hundred dollars.

If those are the two that you've narrowed your choices down to then, no question,
Savage X SS

Dave you've been quite the help and I do appreciate it. I'm probably going to go this route since this will more than likely be my Summer 2007 baby and I want to play hard. I'll post pics of the finished product along with any bodies I manage to paint up. Thanks for all the info!
